It wasn't a common occurrence by any means, but every once in a while Saffron got up early. Sometimes, if she hadn't had a particularly late night the night before. That morning happened to be one of those times, and as she put on her hooded parka over all her layers to go out, she spotted the end of Alec's scarf sticking out from beneath the bed.
It was a good excuse for a walk, and to see Alec again, so even though she didn't particularly need an excuse for the latter she pulled out the scarf and set off towards his hut. When she finally got there, there was a girl out front, one she'd never really spoken to but recognized by sight. "Is Alec not home?" she asked, and suddenly she wasn't sure she wanted to hear the answer.
If there was a time that Max would have rather she be left alone, now was it. She'd been staring at her sneakers before, legs pulled in close to her chest, but now she looked up.
"Sorry. Not here." She said, not bothering to hide her annoyance.
It was the way she answered, the sharp tone that said she'd rather not be bothered, that confirmed it for Saffron. "He's..." Gone. She was so ruttin' sick of it. Instead of her leaving everyone, like it had always been out in the black, they just kept on leaving her.
"Laotian, bu," she said softly, and absently twisted Alec's scarf in her hands as she sat down in the snow right where she was.
"He's not here." Max repeated, then stood up, brushing dirt and snow off of her pants. The last thing she wanted to do was sit around and shoot the breeze with what was undoubtedly one of Alec's many one night stands or whatever.
It's not early when Mayko swings by Alec's hut - she's already had breakfast and stopped by the lab - but it's early enough that she figures odds are good that Alec's just rolled out of bed, if that.
"Hey," she says, giving Alec's friend a small wave. Probably means morning sex isn't in the cards today. "Is he up yet? I come bearing coffee."
Max had been sitting there for what seemed like forever, trying to collect her thoughts, and had hoped that maybe she would be able to make sense of everything before someone came across her.
Didn't look like that was happening any time soon.
"He's gone." Max said bluntly, looking up from her spot on the ground. Great. He had people bringing him coffee every morning. It figured.
Gone, in another time and place, might've meant that he'd gotten up to get some breakfast or go for a run. But not here. It's only when a splash of warm coffee hits her foot that Mayko realises that her grip on the cup has gone slack as she stares at the empty hut.
"Fuck," she says finally, righting the cup and cleaning the rim of it with her fingertip. "Just... fuck."
