The day broke crisp and clear like so many days before it now. Lucy had dug through the backpack of camping supplies that Scout had left behind, taking the thermos and leaving the rest. Bundled up, she said her goodbyes for the day, not surprised that Shadow came with her as she trudged down the paths to the compound

"Yeah, probably," he nods, working up a smile in return. When he turns to take the view in, his smile turns a bit more genuine, especially when he spies the new brightly colored compound roof. "It's really nice up here."

Lucy was sure the snow helped with that too. It made things seem cleaner, and to her, festive. "How much longer do you think it will last? It started late this year."

"Frankly I'm not sure that we're high enough." Joey challenged the girl, a playful glint in her eyes.

Shadow, of course, followed behind them, the direwolf in her element now that it was winter. "A bit further, then?"

"I think higher is really our only option." Truth be told Joey was wary around most girls and would continue to challenge them. Lucy was no exception, despite the fact that she took Joey's challenges in stride.

"Quite like flying, in fact," I said, nodding. "In fact, if we hit a bump, I'd go so far as to say that it would be exactly like flying."

Of course, roller coaster rides had safety inspectors. Toboggans didn't.

Nothing looked as it had the last time the sky wept snow for days on end. As she adjusted her furs for a cozier fit, Lyra felt thankful, for this view was not at all similar to the one she'd marveled at with Will from such a height a full year before. "But you know what would be really exciting," Lyra gushed, her eyes brightening with mischief, tone one of conspiratorial anticipation. "Going 'round back to the other side and then sledding down. Who knows what kind of beasts they got over in that blocked off territory now."

"Well, we have Shadow with us," Lucy glanced at the direwolf, in her element now that her fur was dusted in snow. "Maybe not all the way, but only some? It might still be interesting to see."

"Oh, all right," Lyra agreed. "It's probably for the best since I haven't a bow with me. Just a slingshot," she grinned. In her opinion, of course, she could do plenty damage with a nice solid pebble and a sturdy branch but the sledding would do just fine. "Oh! We've finally got film all picked out for Sunday," she piped as they began making their way around the mountain.

"I've only my dagger," not her Narnian dagger, but a small knife that she had been given here and kept at her waist, "but it won't come to that, I'm sure." The sled made furrows in the snow as it dragged behind them, "we're not going that far."

An unbelievable story, likely, but not a lie. She looked down over the island, the snow and the buildings all changed. "This won't be quite the same, but it will be great fun."

"I expect you had never felt freer that day, Lucy." The corners of his mouth crinkled jovially and he cast a glance upon their sleds. "Indeed, we certainly will have fun."

Setting the sled to aim down the hill, she nodded to his. "Should we make a race of it?"
