Karen wasn't exactly happy with the cold, but she didn't hate it, either - the only thing she really disliked was making the trek from her home on the now frozen beach to the compound. That was easily worked around simply by staying with Nick instead, and Karen spent the majority of her days either giving in to her childish side and making snowmen ( Read more... )

Tony, having been watching from the boardwalk, waited until she'd seen him, and then immediately raised his hand in front of his face as if holding a microphone and opened his mouth wide. He held the pose...

...and then turned the pretend microphone into a gotcha finger waggle with accompanying oh no you don't grin, not really caring if he gotcha or not, that wasn't the point.

"Nice sledding technique, there," he judged. "Might need to work on your dismount."

"Tease," Karen called back as she did her best to discreetly brush snow off her legs. Considering she was practically covered in it like she was a powdered donut, it was probably a lost cause. "It's been a while, that was only a practice run."

"Hey, don't blame me because I don't give it up for just anyone," Tony said, with an apparent complete lack of consciousness of what he was saying. "That's a bad message to be sending, you know, I'm not sure I approve. You missed a spot. Or two. Or... all of them."

Karen made a sound of indifference and turned her attention to the saucer. The half she hadn't been on towards the end there was covered in snow instead. "It'll melt. I might be half popsicle right now, but I'm having fun. That counts, right?"

Alain watched the saucer spin down the hill bearing a woman to the bottom. He heard her laughter before he even turned to watch her come down the hill, and stopped on the boardwalk until she came to a standstill. He chuckled and smiled when she was within sight and sound of him. "That looks to be a great deal of fun, sai," Alain observed with a smile. He'd been involved in a number of snowball fights since the snow fell, but he had not once ventured up the hills to sled down.

The embarrassment of being seen ending her run more off the saucer than on it didn't last too long. Karen jumped to her feet, brushing as much snow off herself as she could. She was covered in it.

"It is," she replied, practically beaming despite it all. "Kids can't be allowed to have allthe fun in the snow."

He tried not to laugh, but couldn't quite help himself. The energetic way she'd shot up as if she weren't covered in white turned his mouth upward without his authority. "You seem to have taken that to heart," he chuckled. "I've never seen one of those...what do you call it?" He'd seen a sled or two, but they'd rarely had the opportunity to be used in his memory, and none that looked or spun like that.

"It's a saucer," she said, and picked it up, setting it on its side in front of her. By the way the guy talked (and Karen could have sworn she'd seen him around before, but with green hair), he seemed like he needed to be introduced to the joys of reckless endangerment in the snow. "Just a little more fun than a sled."

The hat on Grigg's head had tassles, and was so brightly coloured that it was definitely eyesore, but he really wouldn't have had it any other way. It covered his ears and the clothesbox had given him the scarf that the Fourth Doctor had worn and some pretty strange glove-like mittens and he was ready for anything. Preferably snowmen, snow people, a snow village.

Laughing as he watched Karen bowl down the hill, he moulded a snowball in his hands. "Now that looks like fun."

Depsite the smile that wouldn't leave her face - it was probably frozen there, the rest of her felt like it - she gave Grigg a wary look, then pulled the saucer up, setting it in front of her like a big, red, obnoxious shield. "That snowball isn't meant for anyone, is it? Because I give as good as I get."

He paused in the middle of the packing motion and looked down at the cold, wet ball in his hands and considered. "Not anyone around here," he replied after a moment, deciding that he ought to trust her threat and not engage unless provoked. "It could be for someone though."

"As long as it's not me," Karen said lightly. "I'd feel bad creaming someone I just made friends with in a snowball fight."

Sam had stopped to watch Karen careening down the hill without realising who it was. Once he had - a hand raised to shield his eyes from the reflection of the sun on the snow - he smiled, waiting to see how this ended for her. He couldn't remember the last time he was on a sled. College, that much he was sure about, but the details eluded him. "You're good at that," he stepped off the boardwalk to offer her a hand up, "you should start a team."

"Good at not crashing?" she said as she used him to pull herself up. She bounced on her toes once and gave him a bright smile. "Think I'll have to work on staying on the thing before I start recruiting."

"You better watch out, then. Someone else might get in and steal all the top notch sledders out from under your nose," he grinned as she pulled herself up, glancing up the hill again. "I don't even know the last time I did that."

"That's a good reason as any to start now," Karen said, aiming for a convincing tone but overselling it. "Come on, no time like the present, right?"

The Doctor had found it. The infamous bear sled. It was back.

Which was why the expression on his face was little more than sheer pleasure as he leaped onto it from a running start down the hill, clinging to the back as he sailed past Karen, laughing his arse off. Hell, he wasn't on council anymore. He didn't have to be bleeding professional.

Even so, if Chase had seen him to that, he'd probably have killed him for nearly breaking his neck.

Karen's mouth dropped in sheer delighted glee when she saw the Doctor slide past her, and not because he was better than Karen - it was the godawful thing he was on that earned her laughter.

"How many My Little Ponies did you kill for that?" she called out, dragging her own plain saucer behind her as she made her way over to where he'd slowed to a stop.

"I took out at least five," the Doctor said, drawing both hands like a pair of six-shooters after he had slid to a stop. "Nicked a sixth. It's traditional, this sort of sled. In...uh...somewhere."

"It's horrifying," she said, and she couldn't help laughing. It was like some kid had modeled it after their favorite flavor of cotton candy and a cartoon bear.

It was great.
