Tabula Rasa Day - MIRROR

Nov 21, 2008 18:52

Whenever everyone pulled together to do something like this, Dale was reminded just why they had something to celebrate. Tabula Rasa has begun as just a handful of people on an empty beach and everything it now was, was because of its residents pulling together and making something of their mutual situation ( Read more... )

The food was great. Bridge had tried a bite of everything, sometimes two, just to get a taste of what the chefs of the island could cook up. And boy were they good. The juice was good, too. Bridge didn't drink alcohol -- never had and he didn't want to start right that minute -- but he could pretend if it made anyone uncomfortable.

Really, what he was focused on was the karaoke machine. It was sitting there, untouched, and it called to him. Oh, yes, it called.

"I'm a little scared to ask what that expression on your face means," Jill said after watching Bridge for a moment. "Especially since it seems to be in reaction to the karaoke machine."

After last New Years, Jill never again wanted to get too close to the damn thing, just in case it resulted in another awkward and embarrassing duet.

Bridge's face erupted into a giant smile when he saw Jill. "You don't have to ask," he replied cheerfully. "You just have to sing with me. Or sing after me. Or sing before me. Completely your choice."

"Oh, no," Jill answered, holding up her free hand and taking a step away. "No, no, no. There was an incident once already and I definitely don't need to experience a repeat performance. I'm sure that no one here wants to live through a repeat performance either. It was bad."

I'm tired and a little disheveled, but smiling, and I figure that's all that really matters. Feeling centered, grounding in a way maybe I haven't in a while, I slip through the party in search of drinks and something to eat, but more than that, seeking out familiar faces.

I've been here more than two and a half years, now, and it feels more like home than any other place I've been. Seems like a pretty damn good reason to celebrate.

Logan wasn't drunk, but he was teetering towards slightly tipsy. His thoughts still fairly clear, but his coordination becoming worse with each drink.

Taking a step back, he knocked into someone, turning a little to catch their arm just in case they started to fall. After all, Logan wasn't huge, but six foot of twenty-odd year old male could still be enough to knock even the sturdiest of people a little off balance.

"Sorry, man," he said, only realizing belatedly just who he'd nearly knocked down.

"Shit," I hiss, stumbling back a step and sloshing whiskey all down my shirt, reaching up to curl my hand in the guy's shirt to keep myself from fallen on my slightly drunken ass.

It's not 'til I hear his voice that I realize who it is. "Tryin' to kill me now, huh?" I say, lips twitching as I rub at the growing stain splattered across my chest. Nice.

Logan was silent for a moment, still never sure how to act when he bumped into Neil, and he let out an awkward laugh as he shrugged his shoulders a little.

"Not so much a murder attempt, more like... I've forgotten how to walk or something. Seriously, I didn't mean to do that," he assured the other boy.

Drink in one hand, a small plate of food in the other, Jill was leaning against a tree near the Hub, toward the outskirts of the party. After two years on the island, she still hadn't quite grown used to all the parties, but she was more likely to participate in them now than she'd once been. Besides, this was an anniversary of sorts for her, almost to the day.

A lot had changed in two years and for the time being, Jill was content right where she was.

"We've got to stop meeting like this," Max announced from beside Jill, talking around his cigarette with the ease of an expert. He removed it from his mouth and exhaled out the side of his mouth away from her. "Your boyfriend is an idiot."

"He's actually a genius," Jill answered with a grin, turning slightly to watch Max, rolling the glass between her palms slowly. And, in fact, if Rodney was anywhere nearby, she was sure he'd find a million ways to prove it. "You should meet him," she added, her smile growing.

"He's still an idiot," Max insisted, flicking a bit of ash from the end of his cigarette. "You're always standing alone at these things. Is he such an astounding example of manhood that he can get away with being a dick? Really, you gotta explain this to me, Jill, because I'm dying over here."

The Doctor had managed to pull himself from the textbooks he'd been cramming, emerging blinking like a turtle from its shell. He deserved the evening off, he figured, and it behooved him to be social even if he wasn't in the Council running. Also, drinks. And karaoke.

Drinks were definitely superior to theory. And maybe if he had enough he'd forget what tomorrow was. Today was Island Day, and that was enough.

Still stuck somewhere between tipsy and trashed, Logan was less than graceful as he made his way through the crowd. All he wanted to do was head back over to the table for something else to eat. ...Something that might soak up some of the booze he'd been indulging in. But with the amount of people shuffling around, it seemed a little imposable.

Step to the left to dodge the girl in the party dress, step to the right to avoid the guy waving his arms as he spoke, and step back to... Damn. Back right into someone else.

It was just a bump, but Logan still paused a moment to apologize, turning cautiously and offering a nod as he spoke. "Sorry, man, it's like an obstacle course tonight, and I don't think I'm getting through it."

"Don't worry about it, mate," the Doctor replied, nearly automatically, before he realised who he was talking to. After all, he hadn't sloshed his (rather good) drink down his front, that was all right, then. "Parties are like that, it seems that everyone wants to be in the same space as everyone else."

He paused, then quirked a brow up slightly as he took a sip from his whisky glass. "Logan, innit?"

It was only then that Logan took the time to see just who he'd apologized to, raising his brows in surprise, and then nodding a little. "Uh, yeah. Logan, Logan Echolls," he said, offering his hand. "You're, um, Doctor, right? Is that The Doctor or Just... Doctor?"

Not that one sounded any less strange than the other to him. Still the fact that he'd known it at all was sort of an accomplishment for him. Usually Logan struggled to connect names and faces, but Jack spoke of the other man so often that the name (strange as it was) had stuck in his head.

I love the fact that the people here throw parties as often as they do. I've always loved a good party, regardless of why it's thrown or who it's for. It might as well be for me...I'm the one who has the most fun.

He wasn't in the mood for much interaction with people, but Vala was team, and team was more important than people. It helped to have found a few drinks first.

He offered a slim smile as he approached her. "Have you seen Doctor Lam yet?"

"I have not," I replied as I turned a smile at him. "Is she newest unfortunate soul to get stuck in this hell hole? I'd better find her and offer my condolences."

"Yep. She should be getting herself a hut in New Atlantis soon." He nodded slightly. "Last I checked on her, she was unconscious, though, so I'd say you've got some time."
