Interplanetary Travel 101: This Is Not Kansas

She checked the seals on her Hazmat suit a few more times and then made sure the hoses were working properly, which they were. Lam was fairly confident the suit was sound -- she did this every time -- and stepped up to the shimmering ripple of the gate, her hands full of equipment to deal with just about anything save major surgery. SG-12 was still ( Read more... )

Daniel was working on Jack's furniture. He was, like he usually was when he was working on carpentry at New Atlantis, shirtless. He looked up when he saw someone come in and stopped sharply when he saw a very familiar face. "Dr. Lam? Carolyn?" He put the hammer and nails down and moved in her direction.

"That is you, right? People have a tendency...not to always be who they look like."

"It's easy. You find a book in the shelf, find a swimsuit in the clothing box, and head to the beach and read. And once that gets incredibly boring, you find yourself something to do around the island. There are always plenty of things that need doing."

Daniel moved closer, pressing a hand to her shoulder. "We will get home, Carolyn. It might take some time, but it will happen, I promise. Usually a few each month vanish. Rodney McKay left and came back."

She looked at him like he'd grown another head and frowned. How could you go and come back? How was any of this possible. She said nothing for a long, long while.

"I'll talk to Beckett. I can't just sit here and pretend I'm twelve and I don't have anything to do with my life," she said with a sigh. "I haven't ever been able to do that. And I'm not really much of a sunbather. Gives you cancer."

"It's not easy," Daniel admitted. "Reminds me more of my life before I joined the Stargate program. Back when I actually had free time." Sometimes he had a little too much free time, but that was neither here nor there. "But things to do will definitely prevent you from going stir crazy. And hopefully we will, too."

Since he'd found the addition of a few friendly faces made all the difference.

"Nothing is easy," Lam grumbled, feeling fussy and annoyed with this crazy island even more than she had when she'd found out about it. She showed nothing but a brief flash of irritation, though.

"Best I can do is keep moving." She shrugged lightly, suddenly drained and not in the mood to move at all. "I'm...going to get out of the heat for a bit, I think. I'm not exactly acclimated yet. Gimme a few weeks, maybe, and I'll be up to speed. Good luck on your building project, Jackson."

She carefully made her way to her feet and gave him a slight smile. It'd take time, but she was flexible...as long as she wasn't being prodded into the camp that said they were doomed to rot in this place.

"Good luck, Carolyn." What was it with this island and the people who should have been closest were the ones he didn't understand at all. Had he really changed that much from the man who'd showed up on the island all those months ago? Mitchell had said not. But now and then, Daniel wondered.
