Somehow Geoffrey figured this duty would fall on him sooner or later, and now three different elements had converged to make it his turn: he was on the Council, he wasn't running in this election, and he was, in fact, master of this stage ( Read more... )

Hands tucked in his pockets, one ankle crossed over the other, Dick leans against a tree and listens to the speeches for awhile. Lets the rhythm of the words, the ideas, the patter of it wash over him. It's different than politics back home. Less bullshit, more transparency. Dick likes that, even if it conflicts with the secrecy of the mission. Dick's not planning to talk about that, but he won't deny it either. Nightwing's not running for Council; Dick Grayson, the guy Barbara Gordon sent him away to find, is ( ... )

"Before I jump down from here, and I probably will jump, just a warning--" His lips curve hard with the force of a grin that says he's looking forward to it. "I want to say a word about who I'm voting for. Jack Harkness over there gave you his speech. I watched him babysit two kids the first day I met him, and, I knew, there's a guy who looks out for people. So he's got my vote.

"And over here, you'll see her soon now, is Barbara Gordon. I've never met four people together who are more competent and more capable than Babs, and besides that, she's going to look out for things a lot of us would never see.

"The last person I'm going to vote for is me. Because I'll tell you the truth, I believe I'm the right person in the right place at the right time." He pauses, considering it a moment, then decides not to skin up his t-shirt to reveal his bullet, glass, and knife scars. "You can all see my arms." Dick turns them and his hands palm out to the crowd saying, "I've been shot, stabbed, beaten and I still keep going," then pulls in his ( ... )

"Hello Mister Grayson, my name is Coraline Jones and I'm going to ask you some questions if that's okay." Coraline said with a big smile. Whilst her nemesis The Evil de Worde seemed to do well with really big words and questions, Coraline found that most of the people on the stage answered better to a smile. And in this game of who gets to ask more questions, Coraline was determined to win. "Firstly, do you mean Gotham City? Like Batman and Robin Gotham?"

That was pretty cool. Unless he was a villain and then she'd have to defeat him. "And if elected what would you do for the children on the island? And do you really mean it about a circus because I really want a fun fair."

"Hi there, Coraline," Dick answers, smiling back just as brightly. He'd hoped she'd want to talk to him. "You can call me 'Dick'. Everyone does. And, yes, I do mean Gotham like Batman and Robin's Gotham."

Considering her for just a minute, he knelt down at the edge of the stage, hand out to help her up. "I'd love it if you'd come on up here with me so we can talk about the island's children, okay?" While he's waiting for her to decide, he projects his voice so that she and everyone else can hear him: "I do mean it about the circus, and a fun fair sounds like a great idea. How would you want me to help with that?"

"Good afternoon," Glen said and cleared his throat. "Pardon me," He said and smiled. "Good afternoon!" he said louder this time projecting his scratchy voice with surprising clarity. "Thanks go to all of you who made it possible for me to be here. My name is Glen Bateman for those of you who don't know me, and if you don't I'd love to get acquainted ( ... )

"Mr Bateman," William said, "or Professor, if you prefer." Then again, he had said in his former life. "Most of the other candidates so far have been quite firm about the fact they intend only to represent the views of the island at large and not their own. Your speech would seem to indicate you see the matter differently; what would you say is the benefit of such an approach?"

Glen smiled, "Glen will do, or if you feel you need to stand on formality, Mr. Bateman is just fine." He nodded and listened carefully to the question.

"Mr...?" he waited for the man's name and then continued with a nod. "I'd say that any candidate that doesn't represent their own views as well, is standing on a slippery slope. No man, woman, or child is truly an unbiased party without opinions, motivations, and backgrounds that shade the decisions they make, based on the perceptions they have of what would be good for a community at large. I do not intend to imply that my first priority would be to put forth my own agenda. That would hold very little purpose for anyone in a society where you're here one day and gone the next."

"Certainly not," William said, nodding. "But as you say, no one is without opinions; what do you think should be on that agenda?"

While it wasn't a production to get Barbara on the stage, Dick had assisted. Barbara gave her speech from her wheelchair, calm, even demeanor that had gotten her elected before. This, though, was something entirely new; politics that weren't seen through the many screens of bureaucracy, but the simplest and most important form of representation.

"Most of you probably don't know me - my name is Barbara Gordon, and I'm from Gotham City. The easy part is that I'm human, and I'm from Earth. The rest isn't easy, but here, it's even more important. You'll hear a lot of speeches today, and while I can talk about me - that I have leadership experience, that I've lead both small teams as well as represented my constituents as a United States Senator, and that I actually specialize in coordinating groups and individuals with different skillsets to work as a whole, but that's not why you're here. You're here to know what I'll do, what I'm concerned with, and why you might want to spend your vote on someone you've maybe only heard of in comic ( ... )

"Miss Gordon," William said, "to sum up, your argument as to why people should vote for you is that you will listen and represent them all, and consider safety a top concern. Do you have any priorities aside from that? Ones that, perhaps, we haven't heard about three or four times already?"

"Actually, to sum up, my argument is that I think that the future of this place lies in the people who live here, not just those who run for office, and that I think that greater coordination is needed through the different agencies and free agents offering assistance to the island in times of crisis." One brow rose as she regarded the reporter in front of her ( ... )

"Good afternoon Miss Gordan," Coraline said in a sing-sorty tone that a child might say to her teacher. My name is Coraline Jones and I'm going to ask you some questions."

Coraline smiled at her before taking out her notebook.

"Firstly, how do you spell con-ste-two-ents?" Coraline asked, biting her lip at the unfamiliar word and how to spell it. They said she could ask questions, they didn't say she had to ask really, really relevant questions. "And most importantly what would you do for the children of the Island? And oh do you think everyone should be trained how to use weapons and how to defend themselves even say eleven year old explorers? Oh and what's your favourite colour?"

"Let me be straight up with you," says Rollie without wasting any time once he's up on the stage. "My name's Rollie Saunders and I didn't expect to be up here today. I didn't plan for it and I didn't work for it. In fact, I once told someone that you'd never find me up here, messing around in politics. While the whole process was going on I was working down in the new clinic near the beach, training with the ITF, doing medical outreach on the island and trying to raise a six-year-old girl ( ... )

Edmund didn't particularly enjoy speaking in front of crowds. Peter was the man of action, the rabble-rouser (in the best sense of the word), the one who lead the charge with a shout and a sword. Ed had wanted to be that once, but he'd realized over time that his place, where he worked best, was at Peter's side, the support and the council. He could lead when he had to, and without hesitation, but stepping onto a stage to ask people he didn't know and who didn't know him to vote for him suddenly seemed ridiculous.

What had he been thinkingNervously he cleared his throat and headed up the steps of the stage. By the time he was standing front and center, Ed had disguised his worry with solemn confidence. Shoulders back, chin up, dressed in the best suit and tie he could find, Edmund believed he could do this ( ... )
