Cain almost never thought he'd see the day arrive. After everything they had been through, he highly suspected that the only reason he was getting married was because he was owed some happiness. Though Angela was gone, her impeccable and perfect clothes were still laid out the morning of and Cain had taken heavily to tradition and found his way to ( Read more... )

Weddings were always something that made Beverly some combination of thrilled and nostalgic. The feelings sort of twisted and mixed somewhere in her chest until she wasn't sure what was what. The last wedding she'd been to had been so damned cathartic (even if it was a relief that they didn't all have to show up naked) that there hadn't been room for anything more.

This was the island. Cain didn't have on a goddamn hat, thank god, though she was sure he'd find one sometime, and Glitch seemed to be all there without any additional intervention. There couldn't be anything more of a blessing than both of those things and people coming together even in the middle of nowhere.

It was very different than that last wedding, but that was all right, even if the happiness gave Beverly a little heartache.

Full sails and a clear horizon indeed, Jean-Luc.

Charlie has managed to scrounge up a suit for the occasion, but had ditched the jacket and tie and rolled up his sleeves by the time the reception started. He was happy for his friends, glad that Olive had come, and anticipated a long evening of laughs and dancing.

"If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your own path," he mused and took a sip of is wine.

"Which is good, because I think that's what a lamp is supposed to do, isn't it? Light the darkness?" Olive had a practical mind, and Charlie's zen often simply made sense if she thought about them for a moment. In that particular way that things that you never thought about but often just knew did. Even if she did sometimes feel like she was missing some of the point.

Charlie gave her a soft smile and slung his free arm around her shoulders. "Yeah," he said with a nod. "That's exactly what it does." He gave a thoughtful nod to the dancing newlyweds. "The Zen books don't really talk about love and happiness, but I think the lamp and the light come close."

It worked, after a fashion. Happiness brought happiness, love brought love, it was all lights along the path

"Zen's not so big on being happy?" It seemed a reasonable question to Olive, having not known much of Zen before Charlie started mentioning it here and there. "Being happy is good. It should try to make people happy. Are you happy?"

The last question came suddenly, perhaps unexpectedly, exploding from her in a way that the things she thought often did. "I am."

Coraline was wearing a rather grown up dress that Angie had helped her make. It wasn't exactly like Gabriella's dress in High School Musical but it was lovely. She'd had to wear a cardigan over it though because it was a little too grown up for the eleven year old explorer but she still thought it was very pretty and she wasn't outshining either of the Grooms in it.

Sitting down at the edge of the party with a plate of food, stacked up twice the size of some of the adults, Coraline was finally beginning to enjoy herself.

"That the dress Angie helped you make?"

Adam was getting to the point where he could say her name without wanting to weep or punch something. He sat down beside her, draped his arm around the back of her chair and broke the corner off of a biscuit on her plate, popping it into his mouth.

"Enjoying yourself, sweetheart?"

"Yeah, it's like Gabriella's dress in High School Musical except hers was red like the Wildcats team colours. The box wouldn't give us enough red to make a dress out of it," Coraline said, between mouthfuls of food. Cain's present was squashed into catbag and was currently lying underneath her chair. She'd eat first and then she'd go and find Cain. "Mmm. I really enjoyed the wedding, it was like a Disney movie except with two boys instead of a boy and a girl."

"It's very pretty," he said, plucking at the sleeve of her cardigan. "And I approve of this, too." He smiled at her and nudged her with his elbow. "Yeah, I suppose it was. I'm glad you had fun."

The ceremony was beautiful, the party afterwords was wonderful, and Cain and Ambrose were so obviously in love that Az couldn't have stopped smiling if she tried. And (even though she had to remind herself almost constantly that DG was her big little sister now) she still felt proud of how well her sister handled her part of the ceremony.

Now that the important part was over, Az stood off to the side. Her dress was white and simple and she'd even put some flowers in her hair just for the occasion. She'd also managed to get an adult drink just for the occasion, but she was trying to be discreet about that part. After all, she was almost fifteen. That was old enough to have a little drink, even if it most certainly wasn't the sort she was used to sipping at her parents' parties.

Cain would have enjoyed dancing all night with Ambrose, but when he saw Az out of the corner of his eye he excused himself to make his way to her side and approached with a mild bow. "Princess," he greeted, brushing a stray hair back into place. "Enjoying yourself?"
