Hiro had been on the island for several weeks now. He couldn't believe it had almost been a month. It seemed like every day his 'celebrity' sighting list got longer and longer. He was happy enough with his life on the island, but he wouldn't be upset if his powers saw fit to start working again. He really had a lot to catch Ando up on ( Read more... )

Not looking in the least bit phased, Glen cleared his throat and looked at Hiro with disapproval which may or may not have been real.

"Mr. Nakamura, I believe you've stolen my scene. Wasn't it just the other day that our roles were reversed? I'll have you know I've put a trademark on elevator riding." Glen didn't think he had ever actually ridden it the other day, but even so, he'd been there first. It was only fair.

"Mr. Bateman! I'm not riding anymore," he said proudly. "I am operating now. Which floor?"

The disapproval didn't phase Hiro, he was playing a part now. Hiro Nakamura, Elevator Operator, saving dozens from having to press their desired floor destination.

Glen glared for another moment and then chuckled. "Operating? Don't you know they did away with that years ago? Or maybe they haven't invented it yet here? In that case, congratulations may be in order Mr. Nakamura for being the very first Elevator Operator of Isle Nublar. I was going to the caves," Glen said without a pause. "I'm able to walk almost all the way to Little Woodsville beneath the ground here. Marvelous."

Hiro nodded and bowed slightly, gladly accepting the congratulations.

"Are there any dinosaurs in the caves?" he asked jokingly.

The island never ceases to amaze me. The other day an elevator appeared in the compound, and no one seems to know how it got here. Something appears right in the middle of the place a good portion of the island residents live and we have NO IDEA? To think that before I arrived here I thought Morn was strange.

I still preferred to take the stairs most of the time but for some unknown reason I decided it was time to give the elevator a try. I wasn't expecting to see the young man standing before me, his excitement somewhat infectious.
"Enjoying yourself?" I ask, laughing.

"Julian Bashir!" he shouted, instantly recognizing the man. He'd met everyone from Final Fantasy 7 who he'd been told was on the island and now he could add Julian Bashir from Star Trek to his list. It occurred to him too late that it might not be Bashir. Boothby hadn't been Boothby at all, but Glen Bateman.

"Oh, are you Bashir?" he asked tentatively.

That was certainly not the reaction I was expecting. No one greets me with that much enthusiasm, I don't think anyone in my life has ever greeted me in such a manner. "Yes, I'm Bashir. Have we met?"

Hiro's smile grew brighter again. He had just met his new best friend.

"No," Hiro pouted slightly. "But I'm a big fan." His smile returned until he had the thought that it might be the mirror-verse Bashir. He started peering suspiciously at Bashir to see if he'd do something unpredictable or downright mean. "Which Bashir?"

The elevator had to be one of the least exciting technological advances the island could have come up with, but it didn't mean it didn't require a thorough inspection, optimally conducted by a former killing machine. After all, maybe it led to a secret floor that held... an equally unimpressive piece of technology.

Still, it was worth a shot.

He waited by the elevator doors, only to have them open and reveal the small Japanese man he had encountered near dinosaur territory. Hiro.

Austin stood still for a while, arms folded, watching him with a narrow-eyed gaze.

"You're from an anime, aren't you."

He had no better explanation for that inexplicable level of sheer enthusiasm.

"Hello again, Mr Teminator," he said happily. "No, but I am from Japan."

"Do you like anime?" Hiro loved anime.

"Just Austin," he corrected, voice suitable steel-laden. Mr. Terminator was marginally better than Mr. T. Marginally.

"And no," he shook his head slowly. He'd only had one accidental encounter with anime, and had sworn to never repeat it. "Can't say that I do. I prefer cop movies. And some science fiction."

"Yes, science fiction!" he exclaimed. It was his favorite kind of show. "What kind of show do you watch?"

Hiro didn't think there was anything wrong with anime at all. They were definitely one of his favorite kind of shows.
