Murphy's Law. That's what it is, Lew thinks. What can go wrong will go wrong, and right when you're beginning to get nice and comfortable and believe that you're secure. He thought he'd left firefights behind, but apparently he'd been mistaken ( Read more... )

I've been sitting mostly to myself the whole evening, thinking about what might have gone down if Nix and I had been there and not off elsewhere. It's not like I'm armed, but we could have found help, could have done something. You spend your whole time training to be a good soldier (not a hero) and then a time comes when you can do something and you're somewhere else.

I've been somewhere else before. I call it Bastogne, when I was far, far away and my friends, my best friends were being hurt.

I'm not letting it show right now, just helping Nix with the bottles and keeping a whiskey for myself to sip from, like a really damn good bottle of milk to help me get to sleep or something.

There's ice at the bar, but Lew doesn't bother with it, doesn't do on the rocks anymore. He's got a drinking glass three-quarters full of blended scotch, and he catches up with Buck in one of the more shadowed corners. Both the whiskey and the darkness do their part to disguise how disturbed he is just now.

He takes a sip, swallows. His jaw flexes with what he's not saying but they both know. If they'd been there, maybe they could have saved that woman.

I see Nix looking at me and decide it's long past time to stop avoiding the subject and cross the bar to wind up at Nix's side with my fingers clasped too-tight around the neck of the bottle. "I don't even have my gun here," I say, like it makes some kind of difference in what happened.

"You want to hear something ridiculous?" Lew asks, eyes trained on the room rather than Buck. "I never fired mine. Not in combat, I mean. Not once." He snorts, takes another sip that's more like a gulp. That makes two people he's confessed that to.

Murder isn't exactly what she wants to think about in this supposed island paradise. Not so much a paradise after all, being trapped here with guys having a shootout, was it? When she'd heard there was alcohol to be had she wasted no time throwing together something cute to wear and getting down to the tiki-bar. God, all it needed was singing parrots and it would be just like that damned Disney bar.

One shot of whiskey down, she sat with another glass looking around for someone she recognised. Anyone interesting would do. She was bored, and Georgie didn't like being bored. Not at all.

There was blood in the halls of the compound.

He'd gone outside for air, to get away from the noise, to stay out of the way. He wasn't the only one, there were people all around, walking around aimlessly, their faces blank or confused. Jason was just like the rest of them.

Well, accept for that whole walking thing.

He followed the noise into the bar and stopped next to a cute girl who was surprisingly alone. "Wild night, huh?"

It would just have to happen that the one actually cute guy here that wasn't practically an old man would be in a wheelchair.

Beggars can't be choosers G, and besides, you're the bored one.

"Not the sort of wild I like, either," at least that much was honest, giving the guy a bit of a worried smile as she lifted her glass of whiskey and ice. "At least they brought out the good stuff. Just would be nice when I arrived in this place if they'd maybe mentioned a murderer on the loose."

"Maybe next time they'll circulate fliers," he smiled, moving around the bar to pour something for himself. "How long have you been here?"

Perhaps it is a testament to how Atia has changed since being in this place, but the news of the deaths that had occurred shook her deeply. Once they would have been nothing, insignificant lives to not concern herself with; here though, here they seemed to matter.

The wine was excellent, better than any she'd had in her time here. She sat to one side, wishing to calm herself. Looking for Jack, or anyone who could offer her comfort. This was not the sort of night to be alone.

She hadn't seen him at the Boarding House, though gods knew it was easy to look, as many holes had appeared in the walls to peer through. There was blood everywhere, visible even from outside, and Kara's next stop had been the clinic.

Buck wasn't there. For the life of her, Kara couldn't decide if that was good or bad. They wouldn't bury anyone so soon, would they? She swallowed hard, exiting the Compound swiftly enough that the sight of the Hub rising in front of her was almost a surprise. She didn't need to drink, and she didn't need to care so frakking much about one guy she'd spent a single night with, but he'd been nice to her. Offered her a spot on his team, for frak's sake. How long had it been since that had happened?

Lips drawn tight, Kara pushed through the doors of the Hub, blinking in surprise to find it so occupied.

I see her as she enters, but she doesn't exactly look as chipper as our last meeting, but I still make my way over with the bottle in hand, tipped slightly over to her as I leave the shadows for her side. "You look like you could use a drink," I assess seriously.

Kara's hesitation at the sight of the bottle didn't do much to dampen her smile at the sight of him, though the self-consciousness that followed soon after did the job well enough.

"Lieutenant," she said, forcing her smile down into a mere quirking of lips. She reached for the bottle, holding it loose in her hand. "I thought maybe you'd earned that ass another set of scars."

"Captain, if I earned myself more scars, you'd be the first to know," I promise, even if the smile doesn't really meet my eyes. It's good to see familiar faces and good to see she wasn't caught anymore in the crossfire. I exhale wearily and force that smile not to drop or go anywhere. "You didn't get yourself caught up in the bullets either, huh?"

There had been a terrible fray. The gunfire had made his horse skittish to such a degree that Jeremy finally led him to the barn where he might find some comfort. As for himself, Jeremy dinnae wish to be alone for once. The sounds reminded him too much of his last moments on Earth, consumed with sorrow and rage for Bess's passing and without a care for his own well-being.

He went to the place known as the Hub. Gladly, there was plenty of wine and opportunity for conversation.
