the dead don't dream

When Samara had first found the film reel marked the Ring Two, she'd guessed what it was and she'd kept it hidden. Even though she hadn't seen many sequels and was unaware of some of the rules governing them, she could guess it wasn't exactly going to provide her with an happy ending. And the first one... she'd thought they were going to free her ( Read more... )

Tonks walked into the room just as the little girl was looking down at the cat with big, wide eyes.

She watched them for a moment, and when nothing else happened, she said gently to the girl, "Are you all right?"

"I think this cat might be my mother," Samara said, looking concerned. "...somehow."

The cat mewed at them both, and crawled under the couch to sleep. Samara went and found the off button on the projector. "Maybe not."

Tonks looked down at the cat quizzically. "It seems pretty... unlikely," she admitted. "I once knew a woman who could turn into a cat, but even if it were something like that, magic doesn't work here. So I'm pretty sure that a cat is, um, just a cat."

"You knew a woman who could turn into a cat?" Samara blinked, and sat down on the couch. "Do you know magic?" Maybe....

Well, it wasn't that she didn't trust the IPD, or that she didn't think they would do it well, but Samara was getting a little worried.

Edward was fussing and it was Ray's turn to walk around and bounce him the way he seemed to like, and as he made his rounds he saw Samara in the rec room. He stopped inside, Edward almost crying, but quiet enough.

"Sorry, kiddo, if I was your mom I'd probably have boobs. And longer hair," Ray added, catching Samara talking to herself.

"No," Samara said, not even really noticing the baby at first. "Look, Ray. It's my mother. My real one." She pointed not at the cat, but at the screen, where Evelyn was paused in the middle. "Look."

Ray looked away from Samara and to the screen. Samara's mom was...Sissy Spacek. Of course, the island didn't work like that, but it was kind of queer to think about that way.

"Yeah? What's she like?" he asked, idly patting Edward's back.

"Crazy. She tried to kill me too." Samara shrugged. Somehow, seeing how broken and frail the real Evelyn was helped her. Evelyn really wasn't in any condition to be someone's mother.

"Is that the baby?"

Delirium watched her little girl, her little beloved sister and shook her head. "No, I'm not." Delirium said tiredly, clinging onto the doorframe for support. She felt tireder today somehow. Tired and old and sad- a sad that went deep down into her bones. She wished she had been Samara's mother and she would have loved and protected her. There was a small part of Delirium somewhere that was still Delight and it hurt her to see the ones she loved laughed at or hurt. "Are you okay...sister?"

"Did you know Evelyn?" Samara turned around, her dark eyes frank on Delirium. "Because she was crazy, but I think she was right. If she had killed me the first time, it never would have all happened this way, right?"

"I-" Delirium looked at her little sister and those frank dark eyes that knew too much and nodded. "Yes and Despair knew her too. She was...different."

Delirium hadn't wanted the crazy mother though, she had looked at Samara and a deep, old part of her had wanted to love her. "I don't know, I don't follow my brother's paths I go my own way. And he can't follow them either, the paths beyond his garden." Delirium said, her legs slowly giving out from under her as she slid down the doorframe and sat in a slumped position. "Maybe it would have but it didn't."
