Angela had spent what felt like at least a year (but was really just a couple of weeks), not leaving her hut much except to go outside and find more things on which to take out her anger against the island; fruit to throw and crush, sticks to smash into something beyond kindling, rude parrots and monkeys to yell at. (She might have been angry, but ( Read more... )

Jim knew he didn't have to keep an eye on Angela. They had never really gotten along, and he doubted she'd want him around anyway. Still, he felt a weird need to keep an eye on her anyway, perhaps for Dwight. When he noticed her sitting alone he headed over, hands in his pockets.

"Hey," he greeted, trying not to look awkward.

Angela was pretty sure that Jim didn't have any way to look other than awkward (especially compared to Dwight's cat-like qualities). She wasn't sure how Pam put up with it.

"Hello," she said, as calm as she had been in a while. Which was subject to change at any time.

Sprinkles opened one eye to observe him for a moment, and then went back to sleep.

"You mind if I sit?" he asked. It was weird, really - he felt like he was walking on more eggshells than usual around her. He probably should have just leave this to Pam, now that he thought about it, but it was too late now.

"You can sit wherever you want." Nothing had ever stopped him from sitting around random places before, and here he didn't even have any work to avoid.

"Do you want a beet farm?" Angela asked abruptly. She didn't think she could stand to work on it herself, when it was Dwight's dream for the future. She figured, of all the people on the island, maybe Jim could respect that.

Despite knowing that Jim had stopped by Angela and Dwight's (now just Angela's) hut earlier, Pam couldn't help going by there herself. She tried to convince herself that it wasn't to check up on her, because she knew Angela wouldn't like the thought of someone 'checking up' on her, but she didn't believe it either.

She smiled faintly at her when she spotted her sitting with Sprinkles just outside. At least she was outside, right?

"Hey, Angela.."

"Hello, Pam." Angela looked up only briefly, concentrating mostly on petting Sprinkles. She knew Pam was checking in on her, and she didn't really mind. Not that she would ever admit to that, but she would do the same for Pam if Jim left her. Or if he disappeared from the island.

"Jim was here earlier, but he left. To go check on the beets, probably."

"The beets," she repeated, refraining from raising a skeptical eyebrow. "Of course." The expression on her face clearly said she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of that ahead of time.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, gesturing towards Angela and her cat.

"It's not really up to me." Sprinkles, as though understanding her duty, woke up, stretched, and curled back up in Angela's lap, completely ignoring Pam. "I suppose that would be all right then."

"So, you're the widow Schrute?"

Yuffie had left the chocobo back at her dojo and taken this mission on foot; mostly, she was pretty sure Angela would think it was unclean. Just... kinda the way Dwight talked sometimes. And while ordinarily it would have been awesome to make her uncomfortable, Yuffie felt responsible now.

"I'm Yuffie. Dwight's sensei."

It had occurred to Angela that Dwight was as good as dead, even though people seemed to think that the people who disappeared just went home. It wasn't like they ever came back the same.

She didn't really like to think of herself as a widow, however. She didn't think she liked the sound of it at all.

"I'm Angela Schrute, yes," she said coolly.

Yuffie dropped down next to her, lacking any sense of what was a good idea and what wasn't. "I'm sorry about Dwight," she said. "I mean, I really am. I may look awesome and cool, but I'm... I'm not. And he was one of the best friends I had here."

She shrugged.

"So anyway, I figured it was customary of my people to offer you my service."

Dwight had talked about his sensei all the time, so Angela knew he had friends he'd cared about on the island, and he had thought this Yuffie was cool. Angela had just pictured her as a little less... not mannish.

"Your service?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"

Nathan didn't actually know that Dwight was gone, so when he saw Angela he greeted her exactly as he normally would have: with a polite smile and nod, not too imposing, the way she seemed to like it.

"Nice day, isn't it?" he said.

"No," answered Angela, instantly contrary though she hadn't really bothered to notice what kind of day it was. "Not that it really matters."

Nathan was many things, and even he knew that not all of them were positive, but one thing he wasn't was stupid. He paused, turned to really looked at her, then asked, as gently as he knew how,

"What happened?"

"I got married, and this stupid island doesn't even respect the bonds of matrimony is what happened." Angela threw a mango that was lying on the ground very hard, but felt only slight satisfaction as it splattered against a tree. "I want to go back to Scranton."
