Angela had spent what felt like at least a year (but was really just a couple of weeks), not leaving her hut much except to go outside and find more things on which to take out her anger against the island; fruit to throw and crush, sticks to smash into something beyond kindling, rude parrots and monkeys to yell at. (She might have been angry, but ( Read more... )

Despite knowing that Jim had stopped by Angela and Dwight's (now just Angela's) hut earlier, Pam couldn't help going by there herself. She tried to convince herself that it wasn't to check up on her, because she knew Angela wouldn't like the thought of someone 'checking up' on her, but she didn't believe it either.

She smiled faintly at her when she spotted her sitting with Sprinkles just outside. At least she was outside, right?

"Hey, Angela.."

"Hello, Pam." Angela looked up only briefly, concentrating mostly on petting Sprinkles. She knew Pam was checking in on her, and she didn't really mind. Not that she would ever admit to that, but she would do the same for Pam if Jim left her. Or if he disappeared from the island.

"Jim was here earlier, but he left. To go check on the beets, probably."

"The beets," she repeated, refraining from raising a skeptical eyebrow. "Of course." The expression on her face clearly said she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of that ahead of time.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, gesturing towards Angela and her cat.

"It's not really up to me." Sprinkles, as though understanding her duty, woke up, stretched, and curled back up in Angela's lap, completely ignoring Pam. "I suppose that would be all right then."

Pam was slightly mystified by the cat's reaction - or lack thereof - but sat down anyway.

"It's nice out today," she commented, not really sure how to go about asking Angela how she was doing in regards to Dwight not being with them anymore. Which was really weird to think about.

"I guess." Angela didn't really care about the weather, as long as she was able to stay out of the sun. She wasn't really in the mood to point out the importance of skin care in this environment; Pam would figure it out soon enough just by looking in the mirror.

"So, um.." She shifted restlessly in her seat. Maybe it was better if she just came out with it. It seems so weird that Angela was coming off as so calm and okay.

"How are you?" she finally asked quietly.

Angela didn't really want to answer, because saying that she was fine would be mostly a lie, and saying that she wasn't would just make people feel sorry for her. She didn't want anyone's pity.

"How do you think I am?" she didn't quite snap at Pam, but it was clear that she was not in the best state of mind.

"Right.." Pam drew out the word, exhaling slowly at the end. She desperately wanted to help, but was at a complete loss as to what to do or say.

"If you need help with anything.." She trailed off, knowing Angela would fill in the rest and probably make her regret even offering.

"I don't need anything." After all, she still had Sprinkles, her best friend, and she had taken care of herself for a long time before Dwight had come along in the first place. "You can just concentrate on the beets, with Jim. Dwight was doing well on his own, but it'll be a job for the both of you now."

"Of course." The beets. It always seemed to come back to the beets. Pam didn't even really like beets. She remembered Samantha taking a liking to them on the other hand.

"The beets."

"Yes. The beets. The beets are the future." Angela sighed and hugged her cat, because truthfully she didn't really care at all about beets. "That's what Dwight said, anyway. He really believed in beets. I'm sure he'd be glad you and Jim will have them. For the baby."

"Yup," Pam agreed blindly, just hoping that they could eventually start talking about something other than beets. Because, geez, what kind of topic of conversation was that, anyway?

"Samantha seemed to like beets." She wasn't really helping herself much here, was she?

"That's good, that she likes vegetables. Raise her properly right from the beginning." At least, Angela hoped Pam would have the sense to raise Samantha as a vegetarian. Anything else was just irresponsible.

Pam refrained from telling Angela that now that Samantha was starting to eat real food more often, she really enjoyed eating just about anything she could get into her mouth.

Somehow, today felt more awkward than usual with Angela. Pam knew why that was, but she still couldn't figure out how to shake it.

"Well.." She shifted and moved to get up again. "I should probably go check on Jim and Samantha. Can't leave the two of them alone for very long."

"Yes. Husbands and babies need supervision." Just a little advice from someone who had learned the hard way about half of that; she hadn't got a chance to know about babies, which was a little bit depressing. Not that she was going to admit that. "I hope they don't disappear," she said. It was a very sincere sentiment; Pam was her best friend, after all.
