Colin had noticed how much things had changed over the past month, but he hadn't really thought too much about it. He'd gone on walks with his friends like he usually did, and got to see how the frees were different and how it'd gotten a lot hotter than it'd been before. And he thought it was really something that it was that hot, because he'd ( Read more... )

"Don't those things usually eat fish and stuff?"

Becky leaned against the frame of the door, watching both him and the turtle with a little smile on her face. Floor would probably have to be washed so no one caught salmonella or nothing, but it was kinda cute. For a turtle. While was some kinda lizard thing.

She walked forward and crouched down by the turtle, crosses jangling.

He hadn't seen or heard the girl show up until she talked, and when she did Colin looked up at her quietly and stared. She was very pretty, like the girls in magazines and on the telly, but he'd noticed that almost all the girls were like that on the island. He thought it was strange, but it was nice to be able to look at pretty girls up close and see they really were pretty. Dad used to say that pretty girls were only as pretty as they could make themselves, but he thought if that was true then he couldn't try that hard because they seemed to be pretty all the time.

"I dunno," he said as she crouched down, watching the turtle pause and duck inside it's shell when she got close. After a moment though, it peeked back out and blinked up at her.

"Hey there," she breathed to the turtle, and stuck her fingers out. That was what you did when you met other creatures, let 'em smell you and figure out you weren't gonna hurt them. "Don't worry, I'm safe."

Becky turned her face back up to the guy. "And hey there to you too. Ain't seen you 'round before."

He couldn't be very sure, it was a turtle after all, but he thought that maybe it was shy. It ducked in it's head again when the girl put her fingers out, but slowly, very slowly, stuck it's head back out and carefully started to check her out, even taking a small little wobbly step forward under the bulk of it's big shell.

Colin on the other hand, just stared at her blankly for a moment or two when she looked up and spoke to him. It was still strange to meet people that were friendly most the time, and not ugly too. Ugly people were sometimes friendlier, unless they were very ugly. Then they were just angry. "Hey," he replied back slowly. After a moment of being quiet, he blurted out "You're pretty."

This was the sight that Miss Darling saw: a young man and tortoise shell, with some bits of cereal and grass before it, but from the angle that she was approaching it she couldn't tell if it was an empty shell or one that actually served as a home to a living creature. Was it a current trophy or an empty thing?

She certainly hoped it was still alive, for dead things that were somewhat sweet and mostly innocent always made her feel vey sad indeed. Coming to stand next to the young man, she cleared her throat gently pointing to the shell. "Excuse me, is he yours?"

"Wha'?" He said, looking up at the girl and away from the turtle. He wasn't sure if he'd seen her before, and he'd seen a lot of people due to spending so much time in the rec room. But as she pointed to the turtle, he looked back at it and shrugged slightly, just a lift and slump of his shoulder as he nudged a piece of cereal in it's direction using his pointer finger. The turtle seemed rather uninterested.

"I dunno." He said, because he didn't. He'd picked up the turtle because he'd wanted to, but now that he had it he wasn't sure what else he could do with it but sit and watch it.

"Oh."

That was an odd way of answering if ever Wendy had heard of one and she had heard of a great deal of strange ways of answering. Still she watched him try to feed the tortoise and get relatively no response and decided it was probably for the best not to press the idea.

"It's all right, I was simply wondering if he had a name."
