She knew he was gone the moment she woke up alone that morning, but that doesn't mean she didn't look. At the beach, at the compound, at her hut... she even went up to the church to see if he was having another crisis of faith. But of course he wasn't anywhere, and when another dawn breaks with no sign of Gus she has to admit what she's known all ( Read more... )

"Are you having a bad day?" John asked with a raised eyebrow for her appearance. He scooted himself off of the boulder he'd been resting on and walked to meet her. "Or did you just run face first into a sweaty dirt cloud?"

"Can it be both?" says Mayko, scrubbing at her nose with the back of her hand and just making things worse. "I think I'd like to have the last two days back to do all over again."

At least then she could've made her last moments with Gus something more memorable.

"Well, if I could turn back time," said John. He reached out and swiped at the dirt she'd missed with his thumb. "I'd be Cher. What've you been doing?"

"Chopping wood," says Mayko, even though she knows how ridiculous that sounds. She doesn't need it, and for all she knows it's going to disappear the next time the island changes anyway. Or she is. "It's been a long couple of days. Thanks."

Jill was heading to the Compound herself when she saw Mayko just outside and hurried to catch up to her. "Hey," she called before she reached her side, then paused to just look at her for a second. Mayko wasn't the easiest person to read, but Jill had known her long enough by this point to know that something wasn't right. "Are you okay?" she asked, frowning a bit.

"Not really," says Mayko, taking a moment to try to tie her dirty hair back out of the way before she cut it all off in a fit of frustration. "I will be, though."

"What's wrong?" Jill asked promptly, because it wasn't often that she saw Mayko like this. The fact that she would be alright didn't change the fact that at the moment, she wasn't.

"He's gone," says Mayko, tightening her hair a little too hard as she says it then letting her hands fall helplessly to her sides. It might be a little abrupt, but Jill needs to know. "Gus. Since yesterday."

It isn't unusual for Bob to not see Mayko in the lab; she doesn't spend every day in there and neither does Bob. So, as he heads out toward the kitchen for something to snack on, he smiles warmly at Mayko in the hall and gives a nod.

"I'm heading to the kitchen, do you want anything?" he asks, assuming that Mayko will be joining him in the lab. It's late, but not that late; they worked much later hours back at NorBAC.

"I... sure," says Mayko, after taking a moment to bite her lip and get herself centred. She can't do much about looking a wreck, though. "That sounds like a good idea."

There's something wrong that Bob notices only then and he hesitates in the hall, brows creasing slightly.

"Mayko?" he asks, voice quieter, taking a step toward her.

"It's okay, Bob," she says, and hopes she's managed to clean the teartracks from her cheeks. She makes another brief swipe just in case. "I'm okay."
