She knew he was gone the moment she woke up alone that morning, but that doesn't mean she didn't look. At the beach, at the compound, at her hut... she even went up to the church to see if he was having another crisis of faith. But of course he wasn't anywhere, and when another dawn breaks with no sign of Gus she has to admit what she's known all ( Read more... )

Jill was heading to the Compound herself when she saw Mayko just outside and hurried to catch up to her. "Hey," she called before she reached her side, then paused to just look at her for a second. Mayko wasn't the easiest person to read, but Jill had known her long enough by this point to know that something wasn't right. "Are you okay?" she asked, frowning a bit.

"Not really," says Mayko, taking a moment to try to tie her dirty hair back out of the way before she cut it all off in a fit of frustration. "I will be, though."

"What's wrong?" Jill asked promptly, because it wasn't often that she saw Mayko like this. The fact that she would be alright didn't change the fact that at the moment, she wasn't.

"He's gone," says Mayko, tightening her hair a little too hard as she says it then letting her hands fall helplessly to her sides. It might be a little abrupt, but Jill needs to know. "Gus. Since yesterday."

"Shit," Jill breathed and she was so tired of hearing those words that she almost shook her head, almost denied it. "Shit," she said again and then, "Mayko, I'm sorry."

"It's not like anyone could've done anything," says Mayko. She's been through this before, and she sure as hell knows Jill has. It just wasn't Gus before. "One moment you're here and the next... you're not."

"Yeah, I know," Jill agreed quietly and more than she hated the fact that she did know, she hated that it was Gus this time. Some people weren't supposed to go, but she had no control over that. No more than anyone else did. "Come on, let's go inside and get some coffee."

"That's pretty much where I was heading," says Mayko, and while she looks a bit rough around the edges, at least she doesn't smell. Much. The shower can wait long enough to have coffee and company. "What else can I do, right?"

"There isn't much," Jill agreed, putting her hand on Mayko's back briefly as they head toward the Compound. She knew, she'd tried staying in her hut for a week, she'd tried drinking all her champagne and then she'd tried to just keep going. The last one was the only thing that had worked.

At least, not much that doesn't involve futile outrage, and Mayko's already tried to get that out of her system. "I could use a good meal," she admits. "And a lot of wine."

"Well, I'm not much of a cook, but I know where to find the wine," Jill answered with a soft laugh, pulling open the Compound door. She and John had polished off a fair bit as they'd tried to deal with the disappearances.

Mayko knows who was the cook, but unfortunately he's gone too. "The wine is the important part anyway," she says.

"There's a bar here, if nothing else," Jill pointed out with a faint smile as she headed for the kitchen. And she was sure she still had some wine back at her hut, although that was a bit of a walk.

"Not really up for that kind of company," says Mayko. "I just want something to make me a little less lightheaded... and then something to make me lightheaded again. I think that's not too much to ask, under the circumstances."

"I have wine at my place if you're willing to take the walk after we get something to eat," Jill offered. It really wasn't too much to ask and if she could supply it, she'd do so more than willingly.

"Done," says Mayko. "Either that or we steal it from the Hub and go get drunk in the playground or something." It actually doesn't sound like a terrible idea.
