It hasn't taken Mayko long to get up to speed. It's not for nothing that she's been working with computers from the moment she could first tap the keys, and the island's gift couldn't have been more perfect for her. The GUI is clean and navigable and even having never seen anything like it before she's using it like a pro inside a week. She's never ( Read more... )

Gus was sitting opposite Mayko at the desk, and had been for sometime. The bookcase had given him a number of misprinted Bibles, the sort of thing that Cicero would have loved, and Gus was pouring through them, brushing his fingers over familiar lines of a familiar text.

Occasionally, he'd glance up, at Mayko's face lit by the glow of the computer screen, and he'd smile, and then he'd go back to reading, idly twisting his too long hair around his fingers.

"I can see you, you know," Mayko remarks as she pauses to turn over a page in the coil notebook. There are still a substantial number to go. "Am I more interesting than your reading material?"

"You're more interesting than most things," said Gus, in the comfortable way of speaking that people develop after months more-or-less together.

"And if I'm distracting you beyond your ability to bear, I can always go to the kitchen. There's probably food in there."

"Food in the kitchen? Who would have thought. I always assumed it was just there for the coffee," says Mayko, setting the notebook down again and going back to her typing, which doesn't interrupt the flow of her conversation. "I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure what you're working on."

Delirium peered around the corner of the lab, looking automatically for her scientist. She often came into see him, just to kiss him or bother him until he blushed red before leaving him, giggling. He wasn't there, however, which was a little disappointing for the personification of Insanity. Delirium flounced over to where one of Bob's people was working.

"Hiiii, iS bOb stiLL hERe?" Delirium asked, leaning over the woman to look at the work she was doing. Interesting. She was still wearing the sweet smelling perfume that Bob had made her, it was a little overpowering like its owner. "i thOUght HE might BE Here SO i bROUGHT icE CREam bUT if hE'S not thEN yOU CAN have iT and i'LL Just...BOTHer you. i guESS."

Mayko actually finds Delirium's company refreshing, even if she can never quite figure out what to make of her.

"I think he's gone off somewhere, but I'm sure he'll be back before long," she says after taking a glance around the room. She hasn't missed the scent that accompanies Delirium either. "Did he make that for you?"

"YeS, For VALentine's dAY." Delirium said with a happy smile. Holding out one of the two chocolate magnums out for Mayko, her own special present from the Island. "i shOULD Tie A LEAD on hiM, LikE BarNAbas doES wiTH ME so hE DOesn't LOOse me. oR MAybe a cat BELL. wHAT arE You woRking on?"

"I'm working on a database," says Mayko, keeping the explanation simple. "I'm pretty sure Bob doesn't want to lose you, I wouldn't worry about that. Leads are probably better left for dogs and horses."

"Whoa," said John, slowly backing out through the lab room door. "Nerd alert."

"I've met your wife," says Mayko, looking up to grin at him. "I think you've lost all right to call anyone else that. If you ever even had any, Dr. Crichton."

"That's Commander to you," John instructed, mostly because it'd been a long ass time since anyone called him that, and it made him feel manly. "You look like you need a secretary."

"I do need a secretary," Mayko agrees. She hadn't quite realised just how much data she'd collected over the months. "Are you volunteering for the job, Commander?"

"Mayko?" Bob says quietly as he walks over to her, still glancing over the loose pile of notes in his hand before he peers over her shoulder. It's a list of things he'd written down months ago regarding the weather tower and he'd somehow managed to misplace them. It's not something he does very often at all and it worries him to a degree he's not ready to admit to, but as it is, he just looks sheepish.

"Mayko, do you think you could add these?" he asks, mouth twisted in a guilty frown. "When you have time, I mean. I don't mean to interrupt you."

"Of course!" says Mayko, pausing in her typing to crack her knuckles and then accept the pages from him. She's discovered she's out of practice, and the repetitive typing has been straining her hands a little, much to her chagrin. "You're not interrupting, Bob. It's about time I took a little break anyway."

"What are you working on?" he asks curiously, relaxing somewhat when she doesn't appear to be annoyed at his interruption. David had never been nearly as understanding about such things.

It's only lately that he catches himself thinking about David in the past tense and every time, his stomach twists with guilt.

"Right now?" she says. "I'm inputting data from our observations on the native flora. Dozens of pages of it, actually." She picks up her notebook and flips through some of the pages, though she doubts she needs the evidence. "I'll be happier once it's all organised in the database and we can start really analysing it. Which reminds me, if you've got any more that I haven't seen, now's the time while I'm on a roll."
