Alice's hut near the waterfall now looked mostly like a hut, as opposed to a pile of stick. She was happy, if only to have a place to store her stuff - though she really didn't have a lot of stuff to begin with. Clothes, her kukris, her guns, and that was it. Not that she minded. Too much stuff could really weigh you down, and it made traveling ( Read more... )

"Holy shit."

There she is again, Alice, who reminds Beth so strongly of Becca, and Beth hasn't entirely worked out how she feels about that one...Maybe it might even be nice to be reminded, eventually, but, right now, it's just faintly unsettling. She ducks reflexively when the coconut goes off, and she still ends up picking bigs of it out of her hair.

Suppose she'd better be glad she's not picking a fucking crossbow bolt out of her neck.

Alice lowered the crossbow, slightly, and looked over at Beth with a half-smirk tugging the corner of her mouth upwards.

"Sorry about that. Don't worry," she added, "I won't hit you. I've got very good aim."

"Yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before."

She's teasing, rolling her eyes and grinning as she walks closer, boots sinking into the sand.

"That's a nice piece of kit."

"It is," Alice agreed, lowering the crossbow further, running her fingers along the foregrip. "I just found it sitting on my doorstep this morning. I can't think anyone who'd give me something like this..." But hadn't most everyone on the island been receiving gifts of one kind or another? She supposed this must count, too. But it wasn't like she needed any more weapons...

Oh well. Target practice was fun, anyway. And it would be useful to go hunting game with...or undead, if any ever showed up.

Projectiles have never been the sort of weapon Jason Bourne would ever choose, but when he sees Alice on the beach, sees her weapon of choice, he can't help but admire it. He's used a crossbow before, could most likely master this one in a couple of shots, but he likes the novelty of not instinctively knowing how.

It's a small break in his own suffocating past, and he almost welcomes it with open arms.

"Very impressive," he says once he's in Alice's peripheral view, voice raised over the surf.

"I thought so when I first picked it up," admitted Alice as she turned her head in the direction of David's voice. She smiled at him for a moment before looking down at the bow as she lowered it, running a proprietal eye over it as she had countless times since she'd found it. It really was an excellent demonstration of craftmanship, of elegance, of military efficiency.

"It's a killer design." Literally.

Any man with his past, even one so controlled as Jason, finds it a little hard to ignore the appeal in a weapon like Alice's. It sickens and interests him at the same time, and he can't help but take a closer look.

"Looks it," he says, giving her a smile as he walks over. "And it definitely looks too new to have been here long."

"I only just got it," said Alice. "Well...found it, actually. On my doorstep. With my name on it." She shrugged, eyeing David. She recognized the look on his face. As one warrior to another, appreciation of a good weapon was a mutual thing.

"You want to have a go?" she asked, turning the crossbow around and holding it out to him. "Shooting coconuts isn't exactly challenging, but it's good for getting the feel of the weapon."

Someone was handing out weapons. For somewhere so free of incident so far, its populace is certainly well-prepared.

Except for Kendra, who so far just had an empty holster. She supposed she could throw it at someone. Truth be told, any skepticism she had about the weapons was mostly rooted in the fact she hadn't received anything.

"Nice shot," she says, crisply, approaching from an angle so as not to be walking in the firing line.

At the sound of an unfamiliar voice, Alice let the crossbow drop slightly, her gaze appraising the woman carefully for a split second before she spoke: "Thanks."

She walked over to the line of coconuts and retrieved the bolts sticking out of them or, in the last case, lying in the sand. Unfortunately the bow did not come with an unlimited supply of ammo, and so she would reuse what she had as much as she could before they became blunt and unusable.

"It's not hard. This thing has so many bells and whistles it'd be difficult to miss."

Kendra walked over to the line of targets and picked up one of the as-yet unshot cocounuts, hefting it experimentally.

"Not to mention you've plenty of time to line up a shot on a static target," she said, still weighing the coconut.

"It would be more challenging with a moving one," Alice agreed. "I plan to try it out on the local wildlife sometime soon." She smirked humorlessly. They all had to eat, after all, and if she got in some target practice at the same time, all the better for it.

There isn't much that surprises Sarah Carter anymore.

The appearance and disappearance of the snow came in much the same way as her arrival. Blending one reality with the next, her dream and waking self indistinct. Most days she feels more human. More aware than she did in those caves. But she still exists on the edge of darkness. Nothing much frightens her anymore.

The coconut explodes and she doesn't flinch. She's been watching the woman for a while now, as she makes her way down the beach. Watching, and she's got no doubt about the woman's aim. No fear when the shell explodes next to her.

"That's an impressive weapon."

"I know," said Alice as she lowered it. She knew she wouldn't hit the woman if she continued firing - her aim was still excellent, even if many of her other senses weren't - but it would probably be impolite to keep shooting coconuts when someone was trying to talk to her.

She was learning how to be a little more sociable, at least. For someone who had spent the last five years mostly on her own, it was an improvement. Even if she was still a suspicious bitch.

There is still something about the way she moves. A measured precision to every step. An effortless fluidity. Every movement for a purpose. She doesn't carry her weapon any longer, more for Beth's benefit than her own, she she still moves with the kind of confidence that suggests she's armed.

Those few hours in the cave made Sarah Carter very resourceful.

She moves out of the line of fire, stepping up to the woman's side, and tilts her head curiously. For a moment, she forgets her social graces. The rules of social exchange. You speak and then I speak. She forgets that it's her turn.

Alice watched her, reminded of herself once upon a time. A time before Umbrella, probably, when she'd been sure of everything. Now, it was hard to be sure of anything. Even those few memories she had of being sure.

It took her a moment to realize the woman hadn't said anything and that she probably should. "I'm Alice," she offered.

John wouldn't ever admit it out loud, but he'd been damned lonely lately. With Dean having disappeared, he'd been counting on spending time with Sammy, butting heads and all. They'd finished their new hut to their satisfaction not long before Dean went poof; John had been figuring he and the boy could get to working on a new project -- targets. Yeah, he knew there was an archery range and all that, but that wasn't the sort of target John had in mind ( ... )

Alice wasn't really surprised by the praise. Most people here couldn't hit a stationary target with a spitball if they were standing a foot away from it. But she'd had practice, and lots of it. As rusty as she was, some things never went away, such as survival instinct.

Though it was unlikely the coconuts were going to attack her.

"Thanks," Alice said, letting the crossbow fall a little so it was pointing at the ground and not, for instance, at the man's face.

A crossbow was one thing John didn't have on the island. Back in the hut he shared with Sam, he had a duffel bag full of guns and knives and a trunk, which had just showed up out of damned nowhere with his name on it, with that and more - bow, arrows, rope, and other assorted material.

Hers was a hell of a nice-looking crossbow. "Stryker's a good brand," he said, gesturing to the weapon in her hand. "You come here with that?"

"No, actually," said Alice, looking at it. "I...found it." She didn't want to say 'the island gave it to me' because that would have made her sound crazier than she actually was. Despite the fact that other people had been gifted with things, presumably from the island. Saying it out loud would just be...

Crazy.
