Claude hadn't been able to bring himself to get rid of Claire's teddy bear, especially after he'd seen the video and known for sure that she was gone. It wasn't even one of the ones that he'd given her, but it was hers just the same, and Claire was the only person on the island who'd really given a crap about him. Well, maybe Peter, but at times ( Read more... )

It seemed a popular gift to distribute to an Island at large. Bennet hadn't shown his off, but he had kept it close, especially in the wake of Sylar and Claire's disappearance. He had watched the videotape, but Claire's words didn't resemble the daughter he wanted to acknowledge and he ignore its very existence.

Denial, after all, could be a powerful thing.

"Arming yourself to the teeth?" he asked, of Claude, giving the man warning of his arrival.

"Well seeing as I recently nearly saw Peter getting his throat slit, I thought it was appropriate," Claude said dryly, clicking the barrel of the gun back into place and twirling it on one finger.

"I heard," Bennet offered evenly, his hands casually in the pockets of a grey suit-jacket. The man might have left the company, but he hadn't left the suits behind, "that you had witnessed the event."

His composure was steadier now. Not an even hand, but getting there.

"I'm not sure, does having your gun pointed at his head count as more than witnessing?"

Jack had killed something new for the kitchen. It wasn't Friday, but he had a new toy and hadn't quite gotten enough of firing the rifle that felt like memory in his hands. The stock was still new and shiny, but the make was old. No one had even made this model since World War II.

He did his best to avoid Claude. It wasn't the guy's fault, he just looked too much like...memory. But there he was, and between the image of the Doctor (with more hair), a gun, and a gutted teddy bear, he had to stop.

"What...I mean...what are you doing?"

"Surely you've seen one of these before," Claude said dryly as he clicked it shut with the heel of his hand. He couldn't really think of this guy as anything but "the random snogger."

"Mmm, Colt model nineteen-eleven. Forty-five caliber. On'y seven rounds. Mine holds thirty," Jack grinned, slipping the rifle off his shoulder. "M1 Garand carbine. Best rifle made, back then."

Claude looked up at it and snorted. "Maybe so, but can't hide it in your trousers, now can you?"
