"We gather here today..."

Jan 13, 2008 12:06

When River first realized that Jayne had disappeared, her first reaction was anger. Anger at the island for taking Serenity's crew, and for making her cry over Jayne gorram Cobb yet again, which was not at all the same thing as Jayne Cobb making her cry. She didn't like either, really, but given a choice she would certainly choose big, dumb, ( Read more... )

Being married didn't feel any different than not being married, but River supposed maybe she needed more time to get used to it. She did know that she was just very happy to have so many people she cared about in one place, all for the specific reason of loving them. She thought it had been a real nice wedding, even if it seemed rushed and unplanned. It suited them, and she didn't want anything else.

Except maybe cake. They'd forgotten about cake. It didn't matter, really, but she liked desserts.

"Shotgun wedding," I say, stepping up beside her with a smirk. "You sure you're not pregnant."

What's the fun of stumbling upon a wedding if I can't be an obnoxious fucking bastard while I'm at it?

River frowned slightly, though she was sure she was just being teased. "Yes, I'm sure. Why? Do I look fat?" She was teasing herself, just a little bit, but she would like to know if this kind of question was ever going to stop.

"Fucking huge," I say, smiling a little wider and reaching up to tweak the flower in her hair, "Decided to do without the marbles, huh?"

It'd been good to see a long-term couple who he considered close friends find the kind of happiness they were so clearly basking in. He'd tugged the Doctor along as his guest, even if he'd objected, and Chase was in a good mood, happy to see the smiles and the general pleasure of the day.

"Hello," said River, more glad than anything that there were people who Mal counted as friends who could come and be happy with them, too. "Thank you for coming."

She wasn't much used to playing hostess, but she figured it was expected of her more than usual today.

"Congratulations on the nuptials," he said, with more genuine warmth in his voice than he usually had. Something about the sacrament between two people who clearly loved each other was always good to see. It meant that he could have faith in them, if nothing else.

"Thank you. It seems to have turned out well, for all that we didn't really plan it. I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. It's not a very fancy party, but that's fitting, really. Mal and I aren't fancy."

Not that she really needed to explain that, when it was so obvious, but she didn't want anyone to think they were missing out on anything they might have expected of in a wedding.

So far, Mal figured he wasn't as terrible a husband as he told River he'd be.

In truth, they'd only been married for a few minutes n' so mayhap he oughtn't be countin' his chickens 'fore they hatched. But Mal ain't e'er played by the rules too much, so's he'd go right on countin'.

As hasty as e'erythin' had been, in the end Mal reckoned they'd pulled off a damned fine weddin', though there was no surprise in that t' be found; they'd pulled off all sorts o' fine crimes time n' 'gain out in the black t'gether.

Loosenin' the top button on his shirt, Mal, for once, had a smile for all as he began t' mingle.

River took a moment just to watch him with the small crowd of people who had come to wish them well. It pleased her more than she could say that he looked so happy. She wanted to make him happy all the time, and if all she had to do for that was to marry him, she didn't need any other reason to have said "I do."

She hadn't quite made the transition to thinking of herself as a wife or Mal as a husband (much less her husband), so maybe that was why she felt like they were both doing okay at it so far, as she slipped up beside him and took his hand. "Nice party," she said. "Fancy meeting you here."

"'magine that," Mal said, feignin' wonderment. "The likelihood o' us meetin' at a party like this's downright near-nonexistent."

Then he grinned n' squeezed her hand, more'n a l'il glad for the moment. Though the day had started out somethin' terrible, he thought they'd managed t' salvage it in a fine way.

"It's like it's a party just for us!" Though in truth she didn't care about having a party at all, when all she wanted was Mal, it felt good to do something to acknowledge those they missed as well as spend time with the people they still had ( ... )

The only comfort Simon received from the wedding coming when it did was that he sure no one else had anticipated the day coming so soon either. And he did not have to pretend to be all that grieved by Jayne's disappearance. Jealous, perhaps, but not saddened.

He could not argue that the wedding had been a nice one. Not what their parents would have planned, surely, but it was still nice in its own right.

River didn't know quite what to say to Simon, when she knew he didn't approve even if he didn't begrudge her her happiness. She just knew that if the island took her brother away from her again, she didn't think she would be able to bear it. So she hugged him, tight as she could, and was grateful that he was there for her at all.

At first, Simon grinned in response to the hug, returning it just as warmly. Then he noticed just how tight it was -- despite her frame, River was quite a strong girl -- and he frowned with worry as he rubbed her back gently.

"Hey," he said softly. "River, are you okay?" It seemed an odd way of being happy, at least to Simon.

"Better than okay," she answered truthfully, though she did not let up much on the intensity of her hug. "I'm just so glad you're here with me. I've had to lose you twice already, and I don't think I can do it again. Not if it's this hard to lose Jayne a third time, because that's just Jayne."

Not that it was something she would admit or even understand herself, but River had liked Jayne, just a little bit, even if they hadn't ever really gotten along. She would miss him for his own sake, and not just because Mal did.

Kaylee had beamed, as though she were the guest of honour here herself the entire ceremony, proud gaze made slightly over-bright by tears drifting between bride and groom, and of course the Shepherd that wed them. Kaylee herself had delighted in the fact there would be a real wedding and she so dearly loved the bride and groom both! Even if last minute, they could be forgiven for this by getting married at all! Though it bothered her none if they had rings or not, a real wedding is better than she could have hoped. If a wedding didn't lift the spirits of things after Jayne had disapeared, then what would? Though no one could help feel more how his presence was missed, as the ceremony began ( ... )
