"We gather here today..."

When River first realized that Jayne had disappeared, her first reaction was anger. Anger at the island for taking Serenity's crew, and for making her cry over Jayne gorram Cobb yet again, which was not at all the same thing as Jayne Cobb making her cry. She didn't like either, really, but given a choice she would certainly choose big, dumb, ( Read more... )

It'd been good to see a long-term couple who he considered close friends find the kind of happiness they were so clearly basking in. He'd tugged the Doctor along as his guest, even if he'd objected, and Chase was in a good mood, happy to see the smiles and the general pleasure of the day.

"Hello," said River, more glad than anything that there were people who Mal counted as friends who could come and be happy with them, too. "Thank you for coming."

She wasn't much used to playing hostess, but she figured it was expected of her more than usual today.

"Congratulations on the nuptials," he said, with more genuine warmth in his voice than he usually had. Something about the sacrament between two people who clearly loved each other was always good to see. It meant that he could have faith in them, if nothing else.

"Thank you. It seems to have turned out well, for all that we didn't really plan it. I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. It's not a very fancy party, but that's fitting, really. Mal and I aren't fancy."

Not that she really needed to explain that, when it was so obvious, but she didn't want anyone to think they were missing out on anything they might have expected of in a wedding.

"I think the less the party is big, the more it means," Chase admitted with a rueful grin. "But the truth is, I don't exactly like parties so much. You got plans for a honeymoon yet?"

"I think so, too. At least in this case," River agreed. "I like parties, but I don't need one to make this mean anything. It means enough already."

River was taken a bit off guard about the topic of a honeymoon.

"No," she answered after a moment. "I think we forgot about that part. We'll probably wait a bit, until we think of what to do. It's not as though there's much of anyplace to go."

"The Doctor made us a decent little hut of a place if you'd like," Chase offered, sure he wasn't about to step on any toes. It wasn't like anyone was using it. "Hammock, bit of thatched roof on a stretch of nice, quiet beach?"

"Maybe. I'll ask Mal. Thank you for offering," said River, her smile bright. It was nice to have another potential nice surprise.

"It's my pleasure," he promised, because he'd spent days thinking of what to do for a gift and all he'd managed was 'wood frame', which the Doctor had pretty much done all on his own. "I just want to see my friends happy. I'm not used to having friends, really," he admitted ruefully.

"Well, that's something you ought to get used to, maybe. It's hard not to make friends here. For me, at least." She was aware that the experiences of others could vary, but that was her opinion. "Today's a good day for all of us, then," she decided. "Because Mal and I, at least, are very happy."

"I think we all are," Chase promised, because he still didn't know anyone dour enough to ruin a day like this. "I'm pretty sure we'll be wanting to see dancing between the new couple too," he said, teasingly.

"I think we'll have to wait for dancing. Until someone has a party with music. We didn't have time to arrange that," River admitted. "I can dance without music, though I think that's a little bit harder for Mal. I don't mind waiting."

"I'm pretty sure I've been roped into dancing now," Chase admitted. "And if you'd let me, I'd love to steal one from you later?"

"Yes. I'd love to dance with you. If you think you can keep up," she teased. "I'll hold you to that, you know. Next time there's a party with dancing, you'd better find me."

He'd completely done himself in and he managed a rueful grin before it fell away and became a genuine one. "Fine," he agreed, now widely beaming. "You get a dance the next party. I pinky-swear-promise, lest moths eat me."

"That sounds like a very serious promise." River laughed. "I'll definitely be expecting that dance, then. I'm sure my -" She had to pause to swallow a giggle at the word, which she was having a hard time getting used to. "My husband won't mind."
