What Veronica Mars thought of the island was varied at best. Some days she liked it; others, she wanted never to have arrived. Whatever the case was on any given day, there was this to be said for the island. Every now and then, it did something right - a party on New Year's Eve, a dog for a late Christmas present, even the presence of penguins. ( Read more... )

Chase had figured after he got the violin (sorry, the expensive violin), he would need to get some cleaning supplies in order to keep it decent. Which meant that he was outside on his way to the Compound when he saw Veronica. "Miss Mars," he drawled teasingly. "Was Santa good to you?"

"Old Saint Nick left me a teddy bear, if that's what you mean," Veronica deadpanned, grinning. That much was true; she'd found the toy on Christmas, meant just for her, a sweet touch if a little out of the ordinary. Her latest present, however, might be the kind of thing worth keeping secret on so small an island. She could decide that later. "Why, Dr. Chase, were you a good boy this year?"

"Apparently, I have been," he agreed with a bit of a smirk, because beyond the violin, he'd found a little bowl, as if for keys or...well, maybe chocolates (in Chase's mind). "I got an expensive violin. Or, rather, it's a violin and the Doctor nearly had a heart attack when it almost fell."

"You sure the Doctor doesn't just have a soft spot for string instruments?" Veronica asked with a light laugh, eyebrow raising. What use did they have for expensive instruments in this place? Alright, probably about as much as they did for surveillance equipment. Why price still had to be such a factor, though, she didn't quite know. Expensive had become a sort of self-imposed marker here, more even than it had been in Neptune; here, after all, there was no economy against which to measure it.

It would probably worry Elliot Reid if she knew her roommate was a spy, but fortunately she didn't, so when she came across the girl outside in the sun she gave her a wide, cheery smile and a wave. "Hi!"

Thank God it's not snowing any more. This is a tropical island; it should start acting like it already!

Now, just for a proper resort - a swimming pool, pina coladas - and we're all set.

"Hey, Elliot." Veronica smiled, tilting her head to the side as she returned the wave.

So her new roommate was a little... exuberant. It was kind of like college, sheer luck of the draw, and she was willing to bet her luck at school would have been worse than it had been on the island so far. Elliot was in a special class of her own, but she wasn't bad. "Enjoying the sun?"

It was weird, rooming with Veronica. She was kind of like the little sister she'd never had, except she was pretty sure she wouldn't let her dress her up like a Barbie doll. At least not until they got to know each other better.

"I liked the snow," she confessed, "But it kind of got old after a while. Especially since this is, y'know, an island. I don't know what the heck climate we're in but I'm pretty sure it's on crack."

"Or crystal meth," Veronica agreed with a cheery little sigh. "But hey, we were pulled out of thin air to a desert island in the middle of nowhere. I stopped expecting sense out of the place a while ago."

She shrugged. Snow really wasn't for her anyway and she'd spent a lot of her time hanging out indoors, so not having to deal with the snow? Completely okay by her.

Taking a walk in the sun, that had indeed been outright reborn if appearances were anything, Isolde carried Jamie, tucked up, but less so, as it was warm and gentle and a good sort of change. It was a casual walk, a mellow tour for mother and son, and that was why coming upon Veronica was no trouble at all for them.

"Feeling a bit chilled?" she commented at the layers Veronica was wearing, smiling teasingly. "Whatdya think, Jamie, is Veronica here trying to tempt Winter to stay a bit longer?"

"Don't listen to your mom, kid," Veronica said, leaning in to brush a finger against the tiny cheek as she grinned. "That's a lesson to learn early on."

She carefully refrained from making any kind of self-conscious adjustment to her outfit, casual as they came. Two years on an island had left her rusty, there was no doubt of that, but it was a skill and she'd made good use of it before the island. She wasn't about to lose it now.

Goodnaturedly Isolde made a noise in the back of her throat, shaking her head slightly. "I feel like I should object to this a bit, as am I his mam." Though she couldn't exactly argue with the sentiment, that was experience she somewhat had. "Really tis those distant relatives that he should be on the watch for."

She wasn't looking for habits and quirks and there was no reason for her to expect them either way from Veronica. It was warm and that was enough.

"Has he actually got any relatives?" Veronica deadpanned. The idea struck her after the saying of it. Somehow she had never stopped to entirely consider that - the whole family structure had changed and shifted on Tabula Rasa, become something entirely new, a formation of aunts and uncles picked haphazard from people who had never once had a drop of blood in common with you, unless it involved running from a dinosaur. It was strange, ridiculous and maybe the best form of family Veronica could have thought up.

"Did Tweety Bird put up a fight?" asks Gert when she sees Veronica. And she does see her, for the first time, actually, thanks to the glasses that had magically appeared. "Because I'm pretty sure you still have a few feathers on your shirt."

Veronica glanced down at her shirt and brushed at it, as if dusting away the feathers in question. "All the rage in Dino Territory," she informed Gert, smiling. "I see you can see now. Congratulations."

"I can," says Gert, searching Veronica's face for no other reason than the fact that she can. "Now I can have the island experience in hi-def." She gave a sarcastic little thumbs-up. "Unless it decides to go Blu-ray."

"Well, then the island'll just have to give you an upgrade," Veronica deadpanned. "You think that's a problem the Bionic Woman'd have if she showed up? Powers disappearing, she might not function even in hi-def."

Jude caught sight of Veronica and recognized her from their little encounter in the snow. He smiled, stuffing his hands into his pockets before making his way over to the girl. He always liked running into people he knew in the city, with a thousand nameless faceless running around, so he felt the same now. She wasn't Prudence or Sadie, but she was a familiar face.

"Hey."

"Hey, Jude," Veronica said, smiling wryly, because there were just some things a girl couldn't repress, no matter how hard she tried - and Veronica hadn't tried very hard at all. "How's it going?" She may have been primarily Lucy's friend, but with the two back together, there was nothing in the rules that said she couldn't at least attempt to play nice.

Besides, the guy had charm. Even she had to give him that much. It might've been the kind of boyish charm that wasn't always worth trusting as far as Neil could throw Logan, but it didn't rub her the wrong way, and that was more than could be said of half the guys in the place.

He sighed, his smirk remaining strong. "It's going great, really. But I do miss the snow, must admit. And you?" His big eyes stared at her intently. She seemed like a interesting person, a gal with a story to tell, someone really worth getting to know.

"You miss the snow?" Veronica asked with a small, slight laugh. "Lucy never mentioned you were a masochist." She knelt down to stroke Taser's head as the German Shepherd nudged at her knee. In the next second, Taser had slipped away to sniff at Jude, looking for attention in new places. "I'm doing alright."
