She knows exactly how to carry on - so run, baby, run.

In my defense, it's not like I disappeared off the face of the planet. Sure, I may have been a little harder to reach than usual, but it's not like I haven't been around. Sleeping in my own room hardly qualifies as hiding.Veronica Mars had been scarce, though. She'd spent most of the last week out of sight, training harder, running further from her ( Read more... )

Sometimes, Charlie Andrews felt like she was constantly doing laundry. She'd never known a man who got through as many shirts as Hiro, and her running dirtied a lot of t-shirts. She was walking down the corridor with a pile of neatly folded washing. When she saw a familiar face, she automatically smiled.

"Oh, hey, Veronica," said Charlie, automatically trying to raise a hand but both of them were occupied. "How're you doin'?"

Charlie was one of those people who could just about always wring a smile from Veronica. That was true now. Veronica smiled, pulling herself from her own thoughts to offer Charlie a little wave. "Hey, Charlie," she said. "I'm doing just fine. You need a hand with that?"

"Awh, no, honey," said Charlie, beaming with her chin against the top of her laundry. "I got it. I've never known a man go through so much underwear as Hiro manages to."

She shook her head.

"How're you doin', darlin'?"

"There are moments when I'm glad Sam does his own laundry," Veronica said, smiling wryly. "They're pretty much every moment I remember he has laundry to do. I'm... good, Charlie, thanks. How've you been?" If she looked tired or out of sorts at all, she would chalk it up to a week of hard exercise.

Sam was just leaning casually against the Compound wall, all six foot sasquatch of him and he had his arms crossed as he watched her. "So I have this girlfriend who looks just like you it's uncanny. You seen her?" he asked, completely casual.

"Five two, blonde, answers to Veronica?" she asked, as nonchalant as ever. "Never heard of her." Veronica bit the inside of her lip then, letting a hint of nervousness show. She crossed her arms, too, watching him carefully.

"Yeah. Yeah, and sometimes, yeah," Sam agreed, slowly nodding his head. "I mean, I thought we were okay, but then suddenly, she took off. So I'm left wondering what exactly I did wrong, but...I told myself that it's just space."

And besides, when he'd done his runner, he never went home.

"Maybe she's the one who messed up." Veronica's chest tightened as the words slipped out like an admission of guilt, when she knew she hadn't done anything, when she knew it would sound worse than it was. Stepping forward, she tilted her head toward him. "Sam, I... It's just space. Really."

Things had been weird lately. The uneasiness he had felt since he found out his clone hadn't dissipated. He didn't see the guy around often, but it was just enough to remind him he was now stuck with someone that looked like him who he didn't exactly like much.

Or at all.

Pam had Sam with her, so he decided to take a walk. Not far from the room, he found Veronica heading toward him.

"Hey, Veronica," he greeted, offering her a tired smile. It had been a long night the night before; Sam had just refused to go to bed.

"Hey, you," she said, smiling, equally weary at the edges -- but only because it was Jim. She stepped over and slipped an arm around his waist, like she might've done with her dad, and grinned. "You look like the walking dead."

"Thanks," he snorted, ducking his head and reaching up to rub at his eyes. It was almost tempting to try to lean against her, because really, all he wanted to do was find some place to relax right now.

"All night, Veronica. I didn't even know she had it in her to cry that much," he said, with a sort of exasperated laugh.

"Anytime," she murmured. "And she's a baby. Of course she's got it in her. It's, like, all they've got in 'em." With an upward nod, Veronica nudged Jim further down the hall. "Come on, let's sit you down before you collapse on me."

On certain days, Isolde felt like she was going to be pregnant for the rest of her days. That the only way that she was going to get over this was to just have her son burst from her and even that couldn't come soon enough enough.

Still she didn't want to go the way she'd seen so many go before her, in the throws of such a weak and painful way of giving life by having her own taken. But on this day, of all days, her mood wasn't here nor there, just in the middle, with that cool sofa in the rec room looking wonderfully promising. She didn't even mind if it was it was indoors. Taking a pause on her way, she smiled slightly, wincing all the while at Veronica who was passing. "Hello, fair Veronica, so sour, are ye?"

"And I suppose you're oh so very sweet, fair Isolde?" Veronica returned, smirking faintly, an eyebrow raising. She liked that Isolde wasn't. It made it easier to connect to her. She also kind of liked being called 'fair,' but that was a whole different matter. "You alright over there?"

"Iffin by sweet, ye mean bittersweet than aye, 'course," she replied, working up the nerve to make the appropriate smirking almost innocent smile. Alas, she dismissed the concerned with a mild wave. "Oh aye, I am, all fine and dandy, just moving slower than I want. How're ye?"

There was always something about Isolde that made Veronica to confess to her. It was rarely a strong enough urge for her to follow through on, but that it was there at all was something she invariably found unnerving. Taking a few steps closer, she eased into a nearby chair. "Tired," she said, grinning. "Been out training." Bantos was a hell of a lot harder than it looked. "While you're off being a turtle woman."

Logan didn't venture too deep into compound usually, he was strictly a recroom and kitchen sort of guy. However, today he'd been so busy trying to look for George, without looking like he was looking, that he'd been on nearly every floor before he finally came back up to ground level... and face to face with Veronica.

"Uh, hey," was his smooth greeting, taking the last step up the stairs and offering a small smile.

Veronica took a step back, a little surprised to see anyone coming her way, let alone Logan. "Hey yourself," she said, returning the smile with just a little one of her own. "Up to no good, I take it?"

"Oh, you know, planning my legacy and possibly encouraging the birth of the Anti-Christ. The usual. You?" Logan asked, offing his best casual smirk as he moved to lean against the wall.

"What was that?" Veronica asked suddenly, looking around the hall with wide eyes as she pushed off the wall a little. "I suddenly felt this - this - this inexplicable chill fall over me. I think it was... hell freezing over."
