It didn't really feel right to rip into an angry song with Sola on the blanket next to him, just like it didn't feel right to wail mournfully about drinking away the memory of some woman in a bar. Especially not when she babbled right along with his guitar. Jesus, if her next few words came from one of those songs, Padme might kill him ( Read more... )

"You know," the Doctor said thoughtfully, curbing Atalanta from sniffing too hard at the blanket, "I've heard that song sung to that same girl more than once. I think you might need to get a new one."

"She lends herself to it," said Jay, looking up with a grin. "Besides, I don't think I'm allowed to start her on anything anti-lullaby for a few more months. Then we really start leaning it."

"How about 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'?" the Doctor asked. "I mean, no offense, Jay mate, but Harkness just has a better singing voice. Your guitar skills are better, though." He gestured to ask if he could sit.

Whether offense was meant or not, a darker, almost hurt look did flit across Jay's face. "Sorry, man. I lost most of my voice when I came here." Which was true, really. Though he was usually happy with it, there were days he couldn't deny it was a shell of the talent he used to have.

Jack was heading in to get a new book in Russian when he saw that face that made his heart leap. He'd seen Jay around, knew he was with Padme. He hated being in the dark about things...but they'd never had a chance to meet.

Jack watched for a while, just listening. He could play, that was for sure. Jack's eyes were drawn to Jay's fingers, just like he was always drawn to watch Greg's hands when he was playing. Unfortunately, there was nothing that ruined stealth like a baby recognizing you, and Sola shrieked and reached for Jack, arms waving wildly.

He chuckled and came closer. "Hi," he said to Jay. "I'm Jack. Harkness."

Jack Harkness. Now there was a name Jay knew, mostly because he'd been involved in Chase's last romantic polygon. It was hard to know what to think there. After all, he'd been a rival against Chase for House, but hell if Jay would have known if he wanted him to win or lose.

Padme trusted him though, so that was something.

"Jay Guthrie," he responded, pausing to stick a hand out.

"Good to meet you, Jay," Jack smiled, shaking his hand firmly. "Padme's told me about you. Congratulation are in order, yeah?"

Sola shrieked at him again, and he dropped to his knees to be at her level. "Hiya, gorgeous. Date with daddy today?"

"Yeah, they are," said Jay, and smiled. "I'm a lucky guy." He supposed Jack would have a vague knowledge of his history, and so he watched Sola greet him with a combination of warmth and wariness that was all Guthrie.

They were chords she would have recognized anywhere.

Penny had been on her way to the compound, the walk with records and coat and camera becoming routine by now, when she heard it and subsequently froze, then swallowed. Nearly five months it had been since they sang it leaving Topeka, after the night the band nearly split, music blaring from the bus speakers and everyone, William and the roadies and the other girls, singing at the top of their lungs. There weren't many songs that could get to her, she would've liked to say, but however many there were, "Tiny Dancer" was one of them, just for those few short minutes when everything had been perfect, and it took a moment, but eventually she breathed deeply and willed herself forward along the path until she saw the source of the music. And it wasn't a sight she wanted to disturb, so she kept a few feet away, smiling wistfully as the song continued. Count the headlights on the highway.

Jay kept singing, caught up too much to realize his audience was bigger than the baby giggling on the blanket. Eventually, though, Sola caught sight of the stranger and began to stare, and as Jay wound down, he followed her gaze.

"Hey there."

Penny had just kept watching until he looked at her, eyes flickering from him to the baby to his hands on the strings, all of it almost familiar. Russell would do the same thing, she thought, when he and her had kids (and they would, she was sure they would, if only so she could have that one more thing to dangle over his head to keep him with her). But, despite herself, she pushed that one more little bit of a smile, setting the records in her hand down by her feet. "Good song," she said, tilting her head up in lieu of a greeting.

"Yeah, it is," said Jay, and instantly recognized that look that came with really loving the music, loving the music in someone. For one moment, she was Julia, and then she was back to being a pretty blonde he didn't know.

"You play, sing, or just listen?"

Padme was standing behind Jay, watching- listening even more then watching, a smile quirking on her lips. This... this was the kind of thing that cemented her life here. She swallowed, and licked her lips before moving quietly closer- but it seemed like Sola had a baby radar, and the moment she saw her mother she lit up like a Christmas tree.

Jay looked up from his music, letting it fade away as he smiled at her. "Hey, sugar. We're just having a little jam session out here. This baby's gonna grow up singing."

"I heard," Padme said, her voice quiet. A smile played on her lips, and she sighed, bending to kiss her fiance before she sat on the blanket with Sola. "You sing so beautifully, Jay. I wish I could." She smiled, and her face lit up as she bent to press kisses all over Sola's face.

Her daughter yanked at the neck of Padme's shirt with both hands, and Padme sighed as she looked up. "Has she eaten?"

"Everyone can sing," said Jay, mildly affronted at her self-criticism. "And well, she had a little goat milk and sucked on some mango. Does that count?" He played a couple of chords, nothing in a melody.
