It didn't really feel right to rip into an angry song with Sola on the blanket next to him, just like it didn't feel right to wail mournfully about drinking away the memory of some woman in a bar. Especially not when she babbled right along with his guitar. Jesus, if her next few words came from one of those songs, Padme might kill him ( Read more... )

"You know," the Doctor said thoughtfully, curbing Atalanta from sniffing too hard at the blanket, "I've heard that song sung to that same girl more than once. I think you might need to get a new one."

"She lends herself to it," said Jay, looking up with a grin. "Besides, I don't think I'm allowed to start her on anything anti-lullaby for a few more months. Then we really start leaning it."

"How about 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'?" the Doctor asked. "I mean, no offense, Jay mate, but Harkness just has a better singing voice. Your guitar skills are better, though." He gestured to ask if he could sit.

Whether offense was meant or not, a darker, almost hurt look did flit across Jay's face. "Sorry, man. I lost most of my voice when I came here." Which was true, really. Though he was usually happy with it, there were days he couldn't deny it was a shell of the talent he used to have.

The look didn't escape the Doctor's notice, him being observant, and he remembered then a few things he'd been told. "Oh shite...I'm sorry, Jay. Really." He chewed hard on his lower lip, looking more than contrite.

Hell, if anyone else knew about losing abilities.

"Don't worry about it," said Jay, letting his fingers wander the guitar. "I don't expect people to keep notes on my personal issues. It's just one of those things, you know?"

He glanced up with a hint of a smile. "But don't go tellin' me who's better. I don't wanna go to jail for getting rid of all my competition."

"Still," the Doctor said. He tapped his fingers on his knee for a moment, then raised his brows at Jay, still contrite. "Could I play for a minute? Promise I won't break a string."

"You know better than to break a string," Jay said, and handed the guitar over. Little Sola watched them with big eyes, as if wondering why the instrument had left his hands.

The Doctor nodded, considered the audience and the guitar for a moment, then started to play, fairly softly. It wasn't stellar, as the song was written for keyboard, but whatever.

Jay listened, because sometimes he thought music was the language he really spoke, and smiled, reaching out to pick up his daughter and hold her on his lap. When the Doctor had finished, he led her little hands in the act of applause. It was never too soon to learn.

The Doctor was decent; he'd been out of practice with the guitar, and he was nowhere as good as Jay. But he smiled and bowed his head before offering the guitar back gently.

Jay exchanged him for the baby, the Doctor having earned his trust a while ago. "So, is married life suiting you?" His fingers went straight back to the strings as if it was where they belonged.

The Doctor let Sola tug at his hair and giggle. "Definitely," he said, smiling to himself a little, softly. "Worthwhile. You got a date to get legal, yet?"

"October," said Jay. "It's kinda too bad the island doesn't turn colors. You think I could put a request in? We could put up a box and make up comment cards."

"I dunno," the Doctor said, "does the island read English?" He scrunched up his nose as Sola took hold of it.

He did have an extraordinarily pointy nose. Sola couldn't really be blame for her curiosity.

"I dunno. What language does the devil speak?" Jay shook his head, and looked around. "I didn't mean that. Life is good here. It's just the parts where it screws with us that I worry about."
