Walks were something that David never used to do much of. But in the absence of a car and no bicycle, you had to adapt or die, or at least adapt or not get much of anywhere and be even more bored into the bargain ( Read more... )

Mayko is only anywhere nearby because she heard David cursing, and if there's one thing Mayko recognises, it's David cursing at ever-increasing volume.

"What the hell are you--" she starts, pushing impatiently past a low-hanging vine. But the moment she lays eyes on what David's found she completely forgets what she was going to say. "That can't possibly be what I... David?"

"Not sure what the fuck else it's supposed to be," he said, not turning to look at her. One hand reached out and caressed a slightly blackened side. He was smiling, wide and unguarded. "It was just... here."

All the times Mayko's hoped and wished for something like this, she's never really believed it would happen. In spite of Jill's laptop. In spite of everything else that happens on this island.

"David, that's from...." The scorch marks are a dead giveaway, and suddenly she's afraid to approach it, afraid that in addition to the scorchmarks there'll be blood, or worse. "After."

"I know," he said. It hadn't taken any deduction; it had just occurred to him and he had accepted it, his joy at seeing it overriding whatever significance the scarring on its surface might have for him. "Might still work, though." Please, let it work. Whoever, Whatever, let it fucking WORK.

She'd been on her way to see David anyway and hearing him curse was no big surprise, so Jill rolled her eyes and wandered closer, wondering what the hell he was cursing over this time.

It took her a moment or two to realize what was going on. "No way," she said simply, staring at the microscope.

He didn't jump at the sound of her voice. At this point, very little could actually surprise him. "Way," he said, glancing at her, grinning what felt like the widest, most childish grin that had ever been on his face. "Guess someone up there doesn't totally have it in for me after all."

"You just found this?" Jill asked, coming closer and circling David and the microscope, staring at them both. After another moment she managed to tear her gaze from the microscope long enough to catch David's eyes and she grinned at him. "Well, holy shit."

"I know," he said, still grinning. It almost hurt his face. "Outta nowhere. Guess it's like your laptop." He stepped forward, peering at the damage. It looked mostly superficial, but there was no way to be sure just by sight. "Looks like it went through the blast, doesn't it?"

Tim had...gotten himself lost again. He hadn't meant to, but he'd wandered off the path heading back to Abby's...his hut, and suddenly he couldn't find his way again.

Finally, he started calling for help, still moving. "Hello? Hello, is anyone there?" He had a sudden fear of Tony or Abby finding him. It was just as he closed his mouth that he saw them.

Or, really, it was a he. But a he in the middle of a jungle with an electron microscope. He looked from the man to the microscope. "Does that happen often?"

The voice was unfamiliar, but David barely noticed that. He barely noticed that there was a voice at all. He was feeling extremely moved. "Not often," he said. "I mean, it does happen. Not to me, though." He had gotten the distinct feeling that whatever was running this place wasn't feeling like doing him any favors.

"You're not going to be able to carry that by yourself," Tim said, pointing out the obvious. "Want some help?" Of course, he wasn't sure where they would carry it. Maybe the lab Abby worked in. He'd already familiarized himself with the route, bothering her all day. ...that would be if he knew how to get out of the jungle in the first place.

"I'm..." Carry it. Of course, it would need to be carried. It had to get back to the lab, he had to see if it worked... And suddenly he was almost afraid to. Afraid of getting this close to being able to touch a part of himself that he thought he'd left most of in a pile of rubble--and then discover that it was useless.

The scorch marks on it were very dark.

"Yeah," he said distantly, glancing around at the man. It wasn't a face he knew.
