Walks were something that David never used to do much of. But in the absence of a car and no bicycle, you had to adapt or die, or at least adapt or not get much of anywhere and be even more bored into the bargain ( Read more... )

She'd been on her way to see David anyway and hearing him curse was no big surprise, so Jill rolled her eyes and wandered closer, wondering what the hell he was cursing over this time.

It took her a moment or two to realize what was going on. "No way," she said simply, staring at the microscope.

He didn't jump at the sound of her voice. At this point, very little could actually surprise him. "Way," he said, glancing at her, grinning what felt like the widest, most childish grin that had ever been on his face. "Guess someone up there doesn't totally have it in for me after all."

"You just found this?" Jill asked, coming closer and circling David and the microscope, staring at them both. After another moment she managed to tear her gaze from the microscope long enough to catch David's eyes and she grinned at him. "Well, holy shit."

"I know," he said, still grinning. It almost hurt his face. "Outta nowhere. Guess it's like your laptop." He stepped forward, peering at the damage. It looked mostly superficial, but there was no way to be sure just by sight. "Looks like it went through the blast, doesn't it?"

"Yeah, it does," Jill agreed, coming to a stop beside David, her fingers sliding against his back almost unconsciously. "It's likely it's okay, though. It should still work."

And God, it was beautiful.

"We'll see," he said, leaning almost unconsciously into her touch. "We're going to need at least two people to get it back to the lab, though. Probably more." His stomach sank abruptly. "And I don't even think we have what we'll need to use it."

In his excitement he had completely forgotten the box he had tripped over.

"What about that?" Jill asked, nodding at the box a little, though unwilling to move away from David. She'd blame it on the microscope if she had to, but it really was David she didn't want to move away from.

"This thing is almost as attractive to me as you are," she continued, flashing him a bright grin.

He ordinarily would have turned the full force of a cocky smile on her, but when he looked in the direction of her nod and remembered the pain in his shin her words fled his mind entirely. "No shit," he breathed, stepping towards it.

It was really too much to hope.

As David went for the box, Jill stepped toward the microscope, hand out to touch it briefly before she drew it back. The burns and dents were obvious, but she was trying to ignore them. It had happened, they had lived and eventually she was convinced Carlos and the others would arrive here as well.

"It looks like it's been through the wringer," she pointed out.

"I know," he said, bending down and examining the box. Bottles. Posisblyt chemicals. Wouldn't do to hope. Could be anything. He reached out with a slightly trembling hand. "I'm guessing it looks pretty good compared to the rest of the lab."

Maybe it was insensitive, or making light of it, but it was that or be morose about it and there was nothing he could do. What was done was done.

Wincing only slightly at David's words, she nodded, still looking at the microscope. "Yeah, I suppose so," she agreed quietly after a moment, then turned toward him and the box.

"What's in there?" she asked, offering another smile, more forced this time, but just as bright.

He didn't answer her immediately. He was looking at the labels. Gluteraldehyde. Osmium tertoxide. It almost hurt, more than thinking about the lab, about the state it must be in and the possible fates of everyone who hadn't made it out.

It was a significant part of his life, in this box.

"What we need," he said softly. "If it works..." He didn't want to finish. It seemed dangerous to actually voice anything.

"It'll work," Jill said, sounding firm. The island didn't give people shit that didn't work. It might be cruel sometimes, but she didn't truly believe that it wanted everyone on its face to be slighted.

"Yeah," he said, still distant, straightening up but still staring down. It meant... it meant so much. And it also made home more real somehow, more there, like if he could pull back this little corner of reality he'd see it behind, like pulling aside a curtain.

"Why would it do this?" he asked suddenly, looking up at her again. He didn't bother to go into more detail about what he meant.

"Why would it give me my laptop, why would it put me in Carson's body for the weekend, why would it turn half the population into the opposite sex?" Jill asked honestly, meeting his gaze and then shrugging deeply. "It's that mystery that I'm not sure anyone is ever going to figure out."

"Jesus." He didn't quite laugh. It was a rough, clipped sound. In any case, he wasn't going to question it, not right now, not with this gift offered so freely to him. If it was indeed a gift and not more taunting.

"I keep looking for patterns," he said. "I keep expecting there to be some."
