Don't know why that eats at me so...

Jayne was starting to get used to the island. Sure, he'd rather be doing something instead of just lazing around, but hell, at least there wasn't nobody shooting at him, there were a lot of pretty girls around, and everything was free. And spending a weekend as an 18-year-old (and laughing his gorram ass off at Mal) wasn't so bad, neither ( Read more... )

"Gee, Jayne, I didn't know you were a big hero too," said Yuffie, who'd snuck up behind him with typical ninja stealth. "Nice statue. Really flattering. What'd you do to earn it?"

"Uh..." Jayne looked over at Yuffie. "Uh, I dropped a bunch o' money on some folks, and I guess they was grateful 'bout it." OK, so he'd jettisoned the money to save his own skin, and he'd already jettisoned his partner, but he didn't really need to go into that. "Dunno how the statue got here, though," he added, his brow furrowing.

"Yeah, well, I dunno how I got a chocobo either. Things happen," Yuffie said, and then promptly hopped up and began to climb the statue so she could sit on its shoulders. "I think my thing is better, though."

"Uh, yeah, I think I'd rather have a giant chicken myself," Jayne said. Despite his confusion and growing annoyance, the sight of Yuffie sitting on the statue's shoulders made him grin a little. "Dunno what I'm gonna do with th' damn thing. I sure as hell don't wanna keep it."

Veronica had seen Jayne around at a distance, as well as on that film River had been watching. Now she was seeing him up close - a lot closer than she'd anticipated, coming out of the Compound door. Looking from him to the statue and back again, she stared. Alright, this? This was just weird. "Think you can get that all the way back to Serenity?" she asked wryly. Okay then.

Jayne looked over at the girl, who he vaguely recognized as one of River's friends. Probably just as kuángzhĕ de as River was. "I ain't takin' it nowhere," he said. "Hell, I don't even know what it's doin' here."

One of those things then. Veronica arched an eyebrow. "Well, unless you want it to stand here in eternal testimony to your glory so that all who pass it may think of you," she said dryly, "it probably shouldn't sit by the door."

"Well, what th' ruttin' hell am I supposed t' do with a life-size statue of myself?" Jayne burst out. "I don't want it! Th' damn thing shouldn't have ever been made in th' first place!"

It was not difficult to see the man was staring at a statue of himself. What I wondered was, had he made it, or had it been delivered to him in the fashion to which island residents must be accustomed to having their possessions returned to them?

"It's not a bad likeness, for clay," I said with a slight smile as I came to stand next to him. He was quite taller than I, and had a weathered look to him that the statue captured quite well. I wondered where he'd come from, for it was certainly not Terre d'Ange.

Jayne glanced down at the gal and felt a twinge of embarrassment. The last thing he wanted was a good-lookin' woman gawking at this gorram eerie-ass statue. "I guess," he muttered. It definitely looked like him - which was the whole problem.

"Did you do it yourself?" I had to inquire, not entirely seriously, hoping he would not take offense. He seemed unnerved by it-- or else he was simply antisocial.

"No, I didn't do it myself!" Jayne snapped. "Some dumb-ass folks on another gorram planet made it. An' I don't know how th' hell it got here."

Faith was carting a box of liberated things from the compound: cups, a radio, a couple books, and a big piece of fabric she was going to use as a curtain. She walked with a bounce in her step, happily planning how she'd do up her very own place, but that thing made her stop in her tracks.

"Whoa, Jayne. You're hot and all, but you think we all need to see that?" she teased.

"Hey, th' only thing better n' one o' me is two o' me," Jayne replied, trying to make light of the situation. "I don't really want this one, though. You want it? Make a great conversation piece."

Book was heading in for some tea when he saw it. He stopped dead in his tracks, staring up at the terra cotta statue. He smirked fondly, and saw Jayne staring up at it. "Y'all mentioned there was a statue, but I didn't think the likeness would be quite so good."

"Uh, yeah," Jayne said, looking over at the preacher. "Uh... I don't 'xactly know what it's doin' here. I think th' island's messin' with me again."

Book grinned and folded his arms, enjoying the view. "Well, it certainly would appear so. We ain't in the black, and here it is."

"I guess I gotta figure out what t' do with it," Jayne said, looking downcast. "I can't just let it sit here. You got any ideas?" The shepherd was a smart guy - maybe he could figure something out.
