Breakfast by Jack. Pray.

Jul 16, 2007 02:51

Stu and Jack had come to an agreement at dinner in the past week. Jane was getting close and breakfasts were getting tough on her and since there were plenty of hands to help, so it would be. This particular Monday found Jack in the kitchen. He was nothing of a cook, not the way Jane was, but he did his best. He'd made pancakes (which weren't ( Read more... )

Ruth would have been happy to volunteer to take Monday breakfast from Jane, had the woman made any public indication she was in need. Well, that wasn't entirely true. The young woman had been wilting visibly for weeks now, but Ruth hadn't really felt it her place to pry.

She rose early, like she often did, and made the trek up to the compound, dressed in what amounted to an awful cotton track suit and a terrycloth robe, before her shower but looking as pulled together as a woman could possibly look having just woken up in a bamboo hut.

There was a man in the kitchen, one she'd never met but had certainly seen, and the kitchen...

Ruth murmured a discrete, "Oh dear," and stood with her hands clasped over the spread, already puzzling out how to fix the mess.

Jack was starting to think he was going to need to beg the clothes box for some glasses too, trying to put these tiny things together for people. He looked past the pearl and the string at the woman who didn't look very pleased.

"If you want something else, I can try for it, but no guarantees it'll be any better," he said. "I'm not at my best in the kitchen."

"No, that's quite alright," she said, already straightening up here and there without being asked or prompted. She literally could not stand there another moment without wiping up that spilled drop of pancake batter on the stovetop.

"Are you a friend of Jane's?" Her voice was light, higher pitched with just a slight shrill. A subtle way of asking both if the woman was alright and if she knew what the man was up to in her absence.

"She's like my sister, more than a friend," he said, the fondness for her clear in his voice and on his face. "Her husband and she and I had dinner the other night and I offered to take this week since she's...well, she works too hard."

Mimi just watched for a minute, biting her lip on a giggle. "...What are you doing, papi?" she asked at last with a grin, going to the coffeepot.

He looked up and smiled at her warmly. "Making a rosary, dulcita. How are you feeling today?"

"Like I just walked into another dimension--which is sayin' something, in this place." She leaned against the counter, sipping the coffee, eyebrows raising briefly. Damn, that was some powerful coffee. "Why are you making a rosary? You didn't go and find religion on me, did you?"

"No," he laughed. "Te priest asked if I could, so I am. Ask and get, mija. I'm easy."

Ianto didn't have all that sensative of a nose, but there were some things he could detect from quite a distance away. Especially if he was expecting something entirely different. Bad coffee was one of those things.

He walked into the kitchen, idly rubbing at a bruise half-covered by the collar of his shirt and stopped when he saw Jack. His eyebrows rose slightly as things clicked into place in his brain (a little slowly, as it was early), but he soon shook his head and moved over to the counter to fix the coffee situation. "You volunteered to poison the island with your coffee so Jane would have less work to do?" he asked, teasing mildly.

"It's not poison. It gets a body going in the morning," came his retort. "Hey...hey, if you're going to dump that, at least top me off before you do."

"Was planning on it," he replied, picking up the pot as he spoke and walking over to Jack, doing as instructed. "It wouldn't exactly hurt you to drink my coffee though."

"I like your coffee," he grinned, looking at Ianto direct and intent for just a moment before he went back to stringing pearls. "Thanks."

Marian did indeed go to breakfast that morning, needing to be out of her hut. The tourney, though it had started well, had ended poorly.

Spying the man with his pearls she stopped in her tracks. "Is that a rosary?"

Jack looked up from his project and let his gaze drink her in. He smiled warmly, flirtatiously, then nodded. "It will be."

She did not notice the flirtation, stepping closer to better see. "I do not want to be rude to someone I do not know, but would you make another? If it was requested of you."

"Of course," he nodded, pushing the muffin pan closer. "Pick a Jesus and you can have this one."

Tosh looked worried when she saw Jack in the kitchen. "Jack, you haven't been cooking, have you?" It could only mean bad things, she was sure.

"Just pancakes," he replied. "And coffee. The rest I just sat out. Why?"

"Nothing, i've just never seen you cook," Tosh tried her best to not seem worried, "It's good that you can."

Jack gave her a look of skepticism, but let it drop. "I'm not the best cook, but I get by. Are you okay, Tosh?"
