Penblwydd Hapus, Gwen!

Jun 30, 2007 16:48

It hadn't been easy, but it certainly hadn't been difficult. One would think a surprise party on an island of that size would have been folly, but Gwen's friends had managed. Once the word had been safely spread out through Gwen's social circle, the only real trouble was making sure Gwen stayed away from the kitchen and the Hub during the day of ( Read more... )

Until that moment, Gwen didn't think that anyone had known about her birthday aside from Peter, and she'd believed he had forgotten. All day long she'd fretted, telling herself it wasn't anything to be concerned about, people forget things all the time, yeah? Still, she kept waiting, looking hopefully at him at odd moments, as if he might suddenly pull a gift from behind his back with a TA-DA!

This, Gwen's decided, is so much better.

The surprise nearly knocks her off her feet, rocking her back with wide eyes, one arm flying out across Peter's chest in that way mothers do when they have to brake the car too fast and they want to protect the child the passenger's seat. It takes a several seconds to really register what she's looking at, what's happening, and when it does, there's just no stopping the water works.

Her hands cover her mouth and a sob hitches in her chest, but it's a happy sound, if a bit damp.

Tosh had finished the one cider she was allowing herself by the time she made her way over to Gwen, a fruit and ice concoction in her hand.

"Happy birthday." She held out a package wrapped in a piece of fabric from the clothes box. "You look like you're having fun. I'm glad." It was the point of the night after all.

"Oh!" Gwen exclaims brightly, and literally flings herself at Tosh, drawing the other woman into a fierce hug and nearly spilling her drink in the process. "You're wonderful," she says into her hair. "And I love you, Tosh. Thank you so much."

When she eases away, she's grinning -- Can't stop -- and happily accepts the box. "Shall I guess what it is?" she asks, brows lifting.

"I can tell you that it's not anything exciting, truly." Tosh laughs as she puts her drink down, wiping her hand on her jeans.

It wasn't muCh really. A Japanese style box with a lid that slid off. She'd tried to carve characters for health and good fortune and love on the sides, but they were only so well done.

"I love you too Gwen. I'm glad we pulled something together for you. It's all Ianto, truly. Without him organising, none of this would have come together."

Tosh looked out at the crowd of people gathered and smiled. She was glad everyone had come, she just hoped they didn't run out of food.

Cider seemed the best way to relax, so she helped herself to one, staying near the bar in case anyone needed help. She'd relax once she was sure Gwen was having fun. One drink wouldn't hurt her, or the baby, she knew that. Besides, it was a party.

Cuddy was smiling, right along with everyone else. She hadn't seen Gwen in so long, but missing her birthday just didn't seem right at all. So she'd chosen to come, and from the atmosphere in the room it was going to be a good party.

It had been a good amount of work, but the results had been worth it. Seeing Gwen cry wasn't something Ianto was very fond of, but in this instance, he couldn't be happier.

Drink in hand, Ianto stayed by the bar, watching to make sure that everything went as planned. He'd mingle later, but right now he was content to listen to the music and see that everyone was provided for.

Sarah Jane sidled up to Ianto's side, pursing her lips and staring into the middle distance, even though she was clearly there to speak with him. "A word?"

Ianto looked up with a smile for Sarah Jane. "Hello," he greeted quietly. "Of course, what's the matter?"

"Now why would you say something's the matter!" she demanded, hands upon her hips. But she was smiling, which probably gave her away.

It had been a sight to remember. Sarah Jane had spent an hour actually physically fighting with the bookshelf, a foot on it for leverage as she yanked out book after book, throwing them at it as she gave it the sternest words of warning she had in her. "If you don't give me what I want, you will regret it," she assured, half a mind to fetch K-9 already.

She'd been knee-deep in sonnets and love letters between lovers of old when she'd finally received it and smiled to herself, content. "Now, was that so hard?"

Now she just had to dress and get to the party, hoping Peter would leave without her. She'd even wrapped the present in a shawl, arriving with a confident grin as she made sure she was all best dressed in her polka-dot red dress. She had reason to be pleased, after all. She'd won against the bookshelf (and yes, had cleaned up).

"What did you give her?" Peter asked, sliding covertly up behind Sarah Jane. His arms settled easily around her waist as he nuzzled into her hair. His sense of propriety had definitely shifted, of late. There were levels to this sort of thing, he thought.

Oh, how good. Gwen's party would have confetti soon enough. It was just a matter of time before Sarah Jane imploded in a rush of being lavished with so much affection that she burst and she all-too-happily leaned back into the touch, giving a pleased murmur.

A deep inhalation to regain her wits and she had moved her head just enough to let her nose brush Peter's cheek. "I gave her a book I wrote, once upon a time."

"I didn't know you had written a book," Peter replied, clearly impressed. "Fiction or non-fiction?" He swept her hair back over her shoulder so that he could press a lingering kiss to the side of her neck. "Or non-fiction disguised as fiction?"
