It hadn't been easy, but it certainly hadn't been difficult. One would think a surprise party on an island of that size would have been folly, but Gwen's friends had managed. Once the word had been safely spread out through Gwen's social circle, the only real trouble was making sure Gwen stayed away from the kitchen and the Hub during the day of ( Read more... )

It had been a good amount of work, but the results had been worth it. Seeing Gwen cry wasn't something Ianto was very fond of, but in this instance, he couldn't be happier.

Drink in hand, Ianto stayed by the bar, watching to make sure that everything went as planned. He'd mingle later, but right now he was content to listen to the music and see that everyone was provided for.

Sarah Jane sidled up to Ianto's side, pursing her lips and staring into the middle distance, even though she was clearly there to speak with him. "A word?"

Ianto looked up with a smile for Sarah Jane. "Hello," he greeted quietly. "Of course, what's the matter?"

"Now why would you say something's the matter!" she demanded, hands upon her hips. But she was smiling, which probably gave her away.

Ianto grinned lightly in return. "Single words are rarely ever good words. But I shouldn't be surprised that you could make it so."

Sarah Jane just gave a laugh and grinned at that. "I've got good news. I thought to share it with you first," she said with a simple nod of her head.

"Oh?" Ianto asked, keeping his grin from growing too broad, but clearly very interested now. Not that he wasn't interested before. "I'm honored, Sarah Jane."

Sarah Jane just softened, sipping at her drink as she glanced up at Ianto. "He loves me," she said, somewhat amazed that she got to say something like that. "He...loves me."

Ianto blinked once, the grin only disappearing so his face could soften, a half smile gently pulling at his mouth. "Of course he does," Ianto replied quietly. "I'm happy for you Sarah Jane."

Well, she hadn't known. "I haven't told him yet," she admitted, something like worry flickering through her face. "I should, though. Given I've felt this way for some time now? I can't...manage the words, really."

"You'll find the words," Ianto assured her. He smiled faintly, adding, "I told Daniel in the middle of a fight. I'm sure you'll find some way to get the words out, when the time is right."

"In the middle of a fight!" she remarked with a laugh. "And you've said it already? How long have the two of you been dating?" she asked curiously.

"Two months," he admitted, not sure if that was all that quick or a reasonable amount of time. It had been five months for himself and Lisa, but that was in normal circumstances. "I wanted to say it, but I wouldn't have said it then, not if I had been thinking properly."

She had been technically seeing Peter for two months, but still...two months outdid the only actual relationship she'd had prior. "Did I ever tell you, Ianto," she remarked, casually, "that once upon a time, I was engaged?"

Ianto raised his eyebrows, not so much surprised that she had been so much as the casual way she mentioned it. "No, you didn't," he said. "To whom?"

"It was thirty five years ago. To a boy named Andy Lofts," she reminisced. "Anyway, the point is that we were together four weeks before I said the words. It didn't work out in the end and I always thought I'd rushed it."
