When the shaking in her hands started to get worse, Jill pretended not to notice it, she pretended not to pay attention to how things began to shake harder when she picked them up or how papers fluttered from her grip. It was nerves or it was the heat or it was her anxiety and Jill was completely unwilling to admit that it might have something to ( Read more... )

Nick wandered past the kitchen, wondering if there was anything in there to catch his eye. He was getting sort of hungry, and was hoping that someone had made an awesome meal he could snitch food from.

Instead, he came across Jill, cursing and bleeding all over the kitchen.

"Hey, hey now," he said, coming into the kitchen and snatching up a clean towel, which he pressed into Jill's hand. "You okay?"

For a second she wasn't even sure if Nick was talking to her, but a moment later Jill nodded, smiling gratefully at the towel and pressing it against her finger.

"I'm fine," she said, sounding apologetic. "The knife slipped." And thank Christ she hadn't had an accident in the lab yet. The last thing she needed was David treating her like she was going to break again.

"Yeah, happens to the best of us," he said, going over to the sink and turning on the water for her. "Once, when I was a kid, my mom told me to go cut up something for dinner, probably carrots or potatoes or something, and I ended up sinking the knife into my finger." He had plenty of stupid stories to tell to distract her; this one was just the start.

"I figure everyone does it at least once," Jill said with a forced laugh, going over to run her hand under the water, washing away the blood. "How old were you?"

To say that Gus' head was hurting was an understatement. After his shower, he'd stood and looked in the mirror, gently probed swollen nose and the bruise under his eye. He'd decided that what he really needed was coffee, which had sent him to the kitchen in his boxers and a t-shirt, wet hair pressed back from his forehead.

He walked into the kitchen just in time to see Jill cut herself.

"Put it under the tap!" he said, crossing the kitchen towards her.

Without looking at Gus, Jill did what he instructed, moving over to the sink and turning on the cold water, thrusting her hand under the stream. Only then did she look at him, eyes widening slightly at the sight of him.

"Jesus Christ, Gus, what the hell happened to you?" she asked, wincing at the sting of water in the deep cut on her finger. Her luck she'd cut part of it right off.

"Never mind me," muttered Gus, wincing, and wrapping his fingers gently around Jill's wrist, holding her hand under the tap and turning it under the flow of the water.

"What have you done to yourself?"

"The knife slipped," she replied, as if it hadn't been anything else. Because it hadn't been anything else, she wasn't sick. Just a cut.

"What happened to you?" she asked again, looking at his face curiously.

Daniel was in the rec room looking over the bookshelf selection - and studiously avoiding anything that had the word Stargate in it - when he heard the shout. He knew that voice and he ran into the kitchen to see what had happened.

"Jill, what--?" he began and then noticed the blood. Walking over quickly, he turned on the tap. "Put it in. We need to see how bad the cut is."

What he was actually saying was whether or not he'd be taking her to the infirmary.

Jill had already dropped the knife and she glanced first at Daniel and then at the water, seeming like she didn't understand him for a moment. "Right," she said, then put her hand under the tap, wincing at the sting of water in the cut.

Once the water had washed off the blood, Daniel grabbed a towel and made her wrap her finger in it. "If that doesn't stop bleeding soon," he informed her in no uncertain terms, "I'm bringing you to the infirmary. Are you okay? What happened?"

"Thank you," Jill said, taking the towel from Daniel and giving him a faint smile. "The knife slipped, that's all. Just... an accident."

An accident caused by her shaking hands, which was something she was still trying to actively ignore, even as the shaking got worse. "I'm clumsy, I guess," she said, forcing a laugh.

Bob had volunteered to stay behind and clean up their lab area when Jill said she was heading to the kitchen. It hadn't taken long, even with Bob being meticulously careful in arranging everything exactly as it'd been and a few minutes later, he was walking into the kitchen.

"I put your files next to--" he says as he pushes the door open and immediately stops when he hears her shout of pain, his brows furrowing in worry.

"... Jill?"

"Shit," Jill said quietly when she heard Bob. If there was anyone on the island she was unwilling to scare, it was definitely Bob, but he was going to see the blood no matter what.

"It's okay," she assured him, grabbing a nearby towel and pressing it to her finger. "I slipped with the knife, that's all."

Curious, Bob steps closer to her, peering over her should to see her clutching her hand, a towel wrapped tight around it.

"Is it bad?" he asks, seeming remarkably calm, though he's keeping a good amount of distance between them, still.

"Well, it's not good," Jill allowed, turning to face Bob and checking on her finger. It was still bleeding, but it didn't seem as bad as she'd originally thought and the blood was already slowing. "Really, I'll be fine. I just slipped."

Whatever the reason for the comas had been, it was nice to have things starting to get back to normal, or as close to normal things ever got, and his only regret was the fact that he wasn't set up to do the poking and prodding that he wanted to on those affected.

Still, all's well that ends well, and he was heading into the kitchen to look for something to munch on when he saw her. He started for her, a smile beginning on his face, and then stopped when he saw the blood.

"Jill?" His brow furrowed in concern. "What's wrong?"

"Cut myself," she answered when she heard David's voice, wincing in pain as she turned toward him, cupping her hand under her finger as it started to bleed more.

"Fuck, is there a towel or anything nearby?" she asked, turning toward the sink and turning on the water. With her hand shoved under the flow from the tap, the blood washing away, she could see the cut was deeper than she'd expected.

"I... yeah, sure." He was still frowning as he pulled a drawer open, pulled out a dish towel and took it to her, looking over her shoulder at the wound. He winced slightly. "Jesus." He laid a hand gently on her wrist. "Might want to have someone look at that."

"It's fine, David," she insisted, letting him draw her handout from under the water. She took the towel from him and wrapped her finger, giving him a faint grin when she was done.

"Well, that's a hell of a way to get your attention," she said dryly, trying to change the subject. Don't ask how it happened, don't ask how it happened. But he was a head scientist. She expected the next question to be how it had happened.
