Dream had spent a lot of time doing nothing once.

Trapped.
Observe.
Patience.
Watch my captor grow old and die. No satisfaction. Still here.
Waiting. They offered to set him free, of course. For eighty years they offered to set him free. In exchange for something. So small, they said. Power. Immortality. A promise that he wouldn't seek revenge ( Read more... )

A new day and a new dress, along with tights and stompy boots laced up to her knees. The sun was hot against all the black and the bare skin of her neck that was still startlingly white.

"Hello, Brother," she smiled. "What are you going to do with the day?"

He looked up at her. "I do not know," he said. "Nice boots."

"Thank you," she smiled, sidling against his side and dragging her fingers down his arm. "I was going to make footprints in the dirt with them."

"It doesn't seem like they would be very good for walking on the beach," he said. He brought a hand up to the back of her neck, laid his palm on it. "Your skin will burn."

Peter had one of Eostre's lollipops. And, while he wouldn't admit it, it made him feel enormously better (candy has that sort of balm). Mind you, he probably wouldn't tell you what was bothering him either. Peter was just melancholic and unused to it.

He paused when he saw the man on the steps. "You look like you feed pigeons in the Gardens."

Dream looked up. Now there was a boy he hadn't seen in a while. There were some worlds where the borders between them and his Realm were even thinner than that of the normal mortal world.

"There are no pigeons here," he said.

He clacked the sucker against his teeth, still staring at the man.

"There are parrots though. D'you feed them?"

"I think the parrots are quite capable of feeding themselves," said Dream. "Living in the jungle as they do, rather than an expanse of metal and pavement."

Joe wasn't supposed to be smoking, but there he was, a single cigarette hanging from his lips as he approached the Compound, smoke streaming from his mouth as he looked around, trying not to appear guilty.

It'd be better to hang around outside, especially since Dale or Logan might see him smoking if he went inside and so he stopped by the steps and gave a little nod to the man sitting there.

"Smoke all you like," Dream said. The guilt was obvious. "But I'd welcome you even more if you have another for me."

"It's not you who'll give me shit if I get caught," Joe pointed out, then reluctantly fished one of his remaining cigarettes out of his pockets and offered it with his lighter. "If anyone asks, I wasn't smoking."

"Now you can blame the smell on me," Dream pointed out. "Thank you." He flicked the lighter open and lit the cigarette, then slipped it between his lips and held the lighter back out.

Over time, Will has learned to recognize the moods of his lordship. It wasn't that he was overly familiar with his expressions so as to know exactly what he was thinking, but he could tell the difference betwixt contentment and quiet consternation quite easily where others might have had some difficulty. Today, it was really quite simple. He was wearing the same face he wore when he asked Will to pen Midsummer. The face Will had become entranced with so many years ago.

Will sat down next to him wordlessly, waiting for the Prince to break the silence first.

"Good morrow, Will," said Dream quietly.

"Good morrow, your lordship," Will replied, voice strong and sure as ever. His eyes remained ever on Dream as if he were trying to solve the mysteries of the universe by unravelling the expression on his face.

The corner of Dream's mouth twitched upward a little, and he said, "I thought we had a conversation about titles, Will."

Another load of laundry in the wash and Billy needed to be outside now. The less time spend under ground the better - it still freaked him out a bit. Some days more than others. Outside, he leaned against the wall of the compound building (where there was a bit of shade) and lit a cigarette - the best way to relax. He nodded to the surprisingly pale guy sitting on the stairs and wondered why he had a feeling he should've seen him before, but he was also very sure he hadn't.

Dream looked up at Billy, with his default expression - which he'd since learned was rather intensely calm and otherworldly and tended to make humans uncomfortable, though he couldn't be arsed to care at the moment.

"I don't suppose you have another one of those?"

That was one freaky look on the guy's face, like out of this world or something and Billy had the bizarre feeling that this guy looked more like his idea of death than Death did. Still, that wasn't any reason to be rude so he dug out the little box he kept the home-made cigarrettes in and opened it, holding it out to the guy.

"Sure thing," he said. "Help yourself. And if you feel like thanking someone, then spare a thought for the pirate who threw it overboard when his ship left this place." That was the way he preferred to think of Captain Jack Sparrow.

"Thank you, Billy," said Dream, and took a cigarette. "Got a light?"
