"The first thing I'd like to do is thank everyone for coming out today," said Dale, standing close to the edge of the stage and speaking out over everyone who had assembled for the meeting to get things started. "It's good to see so many civic-minded people who have an interest in what happens in their community

When the chick got up and started talking about---in essence-- a MALL ON THE ISLAND, Brodie's face lit up. His eyes went wide in astonishment, like someone had just handed him a mint condition Superman #1 comic.
HERE was a chick with her finger on the fucking pulse. It was what was missing-- COMMERCE. The cornerstone of modern civilization.
Caught up in the moment, he simply rose to his feet and applauded.

"Thank you," she repeated, at a loss for any other words.

"Commerce is important, even if we don't have an actual economy. I think it's a good idea, and easy to organize. Just a matter of picking a spot and getting the word out so people know it exists."

"What will you do for teachers?" she asked before she could stop herself. "Are there a lot of people willing to teach more advanced subjects?"
She didn't think Dr. McKay, for example, would be very eager to take on any other students when he was sometimes so grumpy just to have River, who he liked.

"Name's Guy Burgess and I would like you to talk to me about laws. I've been hearing bits and pieces - laws, no laws, I've even heard the words police state being uttered. And you're taking your time, which is your right, but I wonder what with? What is the Council's idea on the creation of laws and the implementation thereof?" While he spoke, he leaned with one hand on the table in front of him. Surely he wasn't starting to become unaccustomed to a morning drink or three?

"I don't mean to offend any council members present, but I think Guy's concern is legitimate. Laws are an important part of a functioning society."

"Hello everybody. I'm Dr. James Wilson, and I work in the clinic, so some of you might have met me before," he started. "I've noticed that a small number of the island's residents do the lion's share of the work around here, and I don't think that's fair. I'm talking about things that benefit the whole island, like the kitchen staff, the IPD, and yes, the clnic staff."
He cleared his throat. He was no stranger to public speaking, but he wasn't used to talking about this kind of thing. "So I've been thinking that people who take advantage of the work of others--and that's most of us--ought to have community-service type jobs assigned, so that we're all contributing to the growth here. For instance, if the building crew works on your hut, you should contribute a certain number of work hours in return. I think there's enough to be done around here to make enough work for everybody."

He smiled and paused for a moment. "And for the record, Stuart is a smart guy with a good head on his shoulders, and he does a lot of work, as I'm sure you know. He's certainly earned my respect."
