Kate had been considering this since she had first seen the notice about the town meeting, and she was determined, even though she was nervous. It was still a very new thing to her, to live in a place where women and common folk got to have a say in how things were run ( ... )

Brodie had only been on the island for about a week and a half, so he honestly didn't have much idea what was going on. But where there was an assembled group of people, there was Brodie.

When the chick got up and started talking about---in essence-- a MALL ON THE ISLAND, Brodie's face lit up. His eyes went wide in astonishment, like someone had just handed him a mint condition Superman #1 comic.

HERE was a chick with her finger on the fucking pulse. It was what was missing-- COMMERCE. The cornerstone of modern civilization.

Caught up in the moment, he simply rose to his feet and applauded.

Kate regarded the applauding young man with surprise.

"Thank you," she repeated, at a loss for any other words.

"The accolade is deserved," Toby said, flashing what passed for a smile from him, which wasn't really much of one.

"Commerce is important, even if we don't have an actual economy. I think it's a good idea, and easy to organize. Just a matter of picking a spot and getting the word out so people know it exists."

Ainsley hardly minded a crowd, having been subjected very often to the crowds of government and Senate and Supreme Court Justices, so standing up in front of everyone, her only concern was, 'was that really potatoes in the kitchen earlier and will they all be gone if I talk too long here ( ... )

"Speaking as a representative of the current Island School, as well as for myself, I would be extremely interested in higher education classes," Klaus piped up.

River didn't like to call attention to herself in situations like this, but she sat up straighter in her chair at this idea. As good as the island school was, it was a bit lacking for those, like River, who were already more than proficient in the subjects currently offered.

"What will you do for teachers?" she asked before she could stop herself. "Are there a lot of people willing to teach more advanced subjects?"

She didn't think Dr. McKay, for example, would be very eager to take on any other students when he was sometimes so grumpy just to have River, who he liked.

"I have, in my time, noticed that when introduced to a great number of people that they have their doctorate, which speaks to their skill in the subjects," Ainsley turned her attention to the young woman and speaking in a more personal, conversational tone. "And on Earth, to earn your PhD, it required a presentation to your peers, so I do think we're capable of a system like that here!"

He had listened to other note (to Ainsley's with grin) their issues and decided to stand and ask something himself. The introduction was short, the question asked almost casually. He stood up, ran a hand through his hair (a movement out of habit, not out of any care that his hair should comply) and spoke.

"Name's Guy Burgess and I would like you to talk to me about laws. I've been hearing bits and pieces - laws, no laws, I've even heard the words police state being uttered. And you're taking your time, which is your right, but I wonder what with? What is the Council's idea on the creation of laws and the implementation thereof?" While he spoke, he leaned with one hand on the table in front of him. Surely he wasn't starting to become unaccustomed to a morning drink or three?

"Who is calling this place a police state? People from Utopia?" Dylan scoffed, remembering only at the last moment to keep her language clean in the mixed company. "I've seen police states, and this is definitely not it. I know this has come up before, and I agree with the Council agreement that we don't need laws, at least not yet. Why do we need to jump the gun on this? Who's complaining, and what about? Do they just have too much time on their hands? Because if so, I'm sure the building or kitchen or cleaning crews could use some help."

"Here's my problem," Wilson said smoothly, rising to his feet. "With a reactive system, like we have now, there's incredible potential for abuse. Laws and defined punishments for serious crimes protect us all from any... lust for for vengance. It would be far too easy for one or two council members to persuade the rest to carry out a sentence that would be unacceptable to the moral code of many or most of the island's residents?"

"I don't mean to offend any council members present, but I think Guy's concern is legitimate. Laws are an important part of a functioning society."

Arthur was not eager to speak in this gathering. His experience was as a commander and a soldier, and while he wished to be aware of the events occurring on the island, he did not think his particular views or talents to be of use ( ... )

Chris was thrilled at the turn out and eager to hear the voice of the people in regards to all the issues that they felt was important. He'd prepared himself to talk about the radio, free society and connections between people, as well as his staffing choices.

Oh, and poetry.

Toby spotted the man he knew to be responsible for the construction and launch of the radio, and pointed at him.

"...you. I wanted to talk to you."

"Isn't that great? I wanted to talk to you too, man," Chris replied. It wasn't so much that he wanted to talk to this man specifically...he was just in a talkative mood. "What's up?"

Wilson had been thinking about this for a long time.

"Hello everybody. I'm Dr. James Wilson, and I work in the clinic, so some of you might have met me before," he started. "I've noticed that a small number of the island's residents do the lion's share of the work around here, and I don't think that's fair. I'm talking about things that benefit the whole island, like the kitchen staff, the IPD, and yes, the clnic staff."

He cleared his throat. He was no stranger to public speaking, but he wasn't used to talking about this kind of thing. "So I've been thinking that people who take advantage of the work of others--and that's most of us--ought to have community-service type jobs assigned, so that we're all contributing to the growth here. For instance, if the building crew works on your hut, you should contribute a certain number of work hours in return. I think there's enough to be done around here to make enough work for everybody."

Jane could not even merit her disappointment in words, and she regarded Doctor Wilson, arms crossed when he was done speaking. "Do you often steal the ideas of other people?" she inquired, utterly dashed. "Or do you content yourself in the thought of stealing what respect my husband was earning for himself?"

"I beg your pardon?" Wilson asked. This didn't seem like Jane at all. "When a need truly exists, more than one person will be able to see it. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has noticed this need."

He smiled and paused for a moment. "And for the record, Stuart is a smart guy with a good head on his shoulders, and he does a lot of work, as I'm sure you know. He's certainly earned my respect."

"Yes, I do know," Jane remarked, her arms crossed. "For it was his idea that you just now passed as your own," she informed him, rather cross and still very much upset. "I will be working my very hardest to support Stuart for a nomination for the Council and to have his ideas stolen," she remarked, shaking her head. "I thought you better," she remarked quietly, walking off to speak to Klaus.
