It had been a rousing success, as far as Jane would admit. For the whole day, she had spent it hanging the shimmery navy blue gauze from posts about the area in front of the compound, trusting the strange machines of the radio to broadcast music until it was too late, and then, she trusted to the musicians that were in attendance to play. There was ( Read more... )

Jim never exactly felt comfortable with the fancy parties, especially considering he had such a lovely woman on his arm. He always felt a little scruffy - out of place, really. Still, he did his best to look presentable, which mostly meant he put on his tux and brushed his hair back so it didn't have its usual just-got-out-of-bed appearance.

Pam had gone off to get some food, and Jim hung back, sipping on the one glass of alcohol he poured for himself. The night was nice, and he sort of stood back and stared up at all the stars. You never could get a view in Scranton like you could on the island.

Jane approached and beamed widely as she found Jim, bringing over a tray of pastry puffs, wrapped over vegetables. "Jim!" she greeted. "Are you hungry?" she inquired.

Jim's gaze went from the sky to Jane. He grinned when he saw the food being offered. "Hey, yeah, thanks."

He took one carefully. He had been planning on heading to the food table himself soon, but having a preview of what he was going to be getting was nice too.

"Everything looks great, Jane. It looks like it's going to be a fun night tonight."

Jane twirled the tray mildly as she set it down with the strictest of care and surveyed the whole party. "It does have an air of promise," she agreed, and it sent a thrill of excitement through her. "And how are you? I have spoken to Pam recently. Are you very much excited about the child?"

Jane approached carefully, very much shy. Ever since the Doctor had told her about the previous night, she was wary, but still wished to speak to hima nd have a dance. "Jack," she spoke, softly. "Good evening."

"Jane," he smiled, easy as ever. He took her hand lightly and kissed the back, then held it out to look her over. "You look amazing. Glowing, really."

"Am I?" Jane remarked, her eyes wide as saucers. "I am simply flushed, I think, from the heat. I have been running nonstop to prepare for tonight!" she informed him. "And do not think I have forgotten about our dance."

The Doctor might very well have been both mingling and avoiding Jack Harkness. It wasn't overly difficult--Jack was hard to miss. He also was trying to get over the fact that he felt slightly like Dr Livingstone in his suit but it was too warm for the one he usually had on.

((The world doesn't end if the Doctor dances, kids. Feel free to come by. STed for a while.))

Mrs. Bennet had supplied herself with a glass of punch and was taking a small break from the dancing when she felt her skirts rustle against a stranger's leg. "Oh, pardon me sir! I did not wish to jostle you," she said with a bright smile. "Why I do not believe we have been introduced. La! I am Mrs. Fanny Bennet, Jane's mama."

The Doctor had not been startled, and he smiled at the woman. He had not quite realised how terribly startling it was to meet someone over the age of fifty or so, but he did not show it. Instead, he swept a bow slightly. "Mrs Bennet. It is terribly good to make your acquaintance after I have heard so much about you. I am the Doctor."

Her eyes went wide. "The Doctor? Why, that cannot be! Mrs. Redman described that gentleman as reminding her of her own dear father, and, ah.." She wished for her fan at that moment. "Do forgive me, I had been expecting a much older person. It is only a little surprise."

In fact, she was quite shocked. The man was hardly older than Jane herself! "You seem to be the right age to be one of my sister Philips' sons, if she had any."

Freddy had seen the notice on the bulletin board and his first instinct had been to stay the hell away. But the idea had continued to creep up on him the closer the Ball approached, and finally he had just given in after telling himself he was just going to say hello to Jane and find something alcoholic.

So, wearing a black suit with a deep red shirt the clothing box had given him (he wasn't sure if this was supposed to be reminicent of the blood soaked suit h'd arrived in, so he simply ignored it) he poured himself a glass of wine and kept his eye out for Jane, so he could say hello and be pointed in the direction of her husband.

Jane approached, gliding over, she was so happy (and the dress did hang to her ankles) and she smiled warmly. "Sir!" she greeted, eyes wide. "You look very handsome this evening. The red very much suits you!"

For some reason his brain found something amusing and nearly ironic in the compliment, but he kept it to himself and smiled before taking a moment to admire how beautiful she looked.

"Hey, thanks Jane." He grinned and set the glass down taking a moment to admire her choice in attire. "You look amazing though, I probably look like somekind of bum standin' next to you." He grinned a little wider, a teasing glint in his eyes.

Jane wrinkled her nose, though she still grinned and laugh lines about her eyes appeared at her joy. "I feel so silly in such a thing, when it barely fits!" she protested, giving a soft coo of disappointment at her stomach, as though apologising to the cause of the garment's tightness.

Corey never, ever, ever missed a ball. Not one, not in the history of things, whether they be grand, sweeping affairs or modest, impromptu fetes. The entire purpose of a ball, you see, aside from general merrymaking, was to dance.

Obviously, even the unfortunate reality of being human couldn't keep her from this one.

After some preemptive sweet talking, the clothes box had provided her with what she thought was a brilliantly appropriate gown, all creamy, flouncy lace with the voluptuous curves of a Grecian urn. Dark hair pinned up from her face, she sailed outside as if she owned the place, chin lifted regally above her long neck.

Jane made it a point of greeting all guests at her parties and she was most pleased to find the lovely young woman she had met so long ago looking ravishing. It made Jane quite envious. "Good evening," she spoke. "I must compliment your dress and yourself on your beauty."

"Oh, you're sweet," Corey replied, although there was no real modesty to her tone. She immediately reached to grab ahold of Jane's closest hand, leaning closer conspiratorially. "You are such a doll for doing this. It's so long overdue," she somberly informed the other woman. By her estimation, at any rate.

Jane's eyes were bright and her only faltering was a flicker over her face, but her smile merely widened to compensate for such a moment of doubt. "It truly has been too long. Near seven months since the last party of such a manner!"
