One wouldn't think so to catch a glimpse of Horatio's grim expression as he led his team out the doors of the Compound, but he was pleased to have been able to assemble such an able-bodied group at a moment's notice ( Read more... )

That cheerful demeanor had given away to something near complete terror and bedwetting. IN theory, this had been a good idea, but Wash remembered as he stood next to these people (oh, God, I was that woman! he thought as he caught a glimpse of Sara), he felt small and scared and much like people must feel when Jayne got all philisphical with his gun pointed at their brainpan. He tried to keep it up.

"It's, ah, just Wash. Actually," Wash corrected him, then immediately felt stupid and fell back in line. He was used to running around with a group of liberal criminals, not sailors and people that looked like coloniels.

He smiled awkwardly at the one they called 'Holmes.' He was kinda weird, but Wash liked him. Besides the fact that he scared the ever-loving pants off of him.

Holmes tried not to look particularly doubtful when faced with his new partner, managing by keeping his expression schooled into amiable impassivity. "Mr. Wash," he said, offering a hand in greeting. He had noted the correction. Along with the apprehension, but he could not quite fault the man on that point. The danger would be high.

Hopefully they could work together on good terms for the next several hours. Holmes had little experience in team efforts of which he was not the leading force, but Hornblower seemed a levelheaded sort of man, quite capable of directing even so diverse a group.

As far as Wash was concerned, he was low man on the totem pole. He'd done maybe three dangerous expeditions, one of which ended in torture and the subsequent rescue by his wife. He was good at one thing, and that was flying, but here he was. He just hoped his keen sense of navigation could be of some use.

"Just Wash, actually," Wash reiterated, shaking Holmes' hand. He seemed pompous, the kind of man Mal would threaten and never look back. This man would have to be his leader, temporarily.

"Wash," Holmes repeated, rather dutifully, with his lips quirking very slightly up at one edge. At least this man was not too easily cowed. "I fear my own weaponry is somewhat lacking," he said wryly. He had liberated a wicked-looking kitchen knife for his own temporary purposes, and had it currently stuck through his belt, but he regretted having come to the island with a violin instead of, say, a revolver. "I do have some basic knowledge of wounds, however."

Quatre had no such worries about women in dangerous situations; Dorothy, Noin, Lady Une, they had long since cured him of any of that. He had his pistol, though with limited rounds he was a bit leery of using it unless absolutely necessary, and he had slung a first aid kid into the bag over his shoulder.

"Good luck," he agreed, and smiled at Ms. Sidle warmly. "Shall we go?"

Sara listened to Horatio (why did that name sound familiar?), then turned and smiled at Quatre. She wasn't armed, but she'd come up with a fairly substantial first aid kit from what she could muster: bandages, Tylenol, clove and tea tree oil, rope and strong canvas if they needed to make a stretcher. "Sounds good, uh...Quatro. Quatre." She looked a bit wry and self-derogating. "Sorry, I'm only used to speaking Spanish."

"It's all right," Quatre said with a shrug and a slightly amused smile. "You can say zero-four, if it's easier, I don't mind." He looked at the makeshift first aid kit and the canvas approvingly. "That's a good idea."

Sara was under the impression that he was a person, not a Borg, but...mmmkay. "I'll pick it up," she said, grinning. "And I figured I should carry something, all things considered. I had a gun at home but it wasn't on me when I got here. Not to mention that a two by four's too bulky to carry."

"Call me Bill," he replied, grinning easily at Horatio. "Mr Weasley is my dad."

He withdrew his bowie knife from its sheath at his belt, alert and ready, and nodded to Horatio. "Shall we?"

"Indeed," said Horatio, setting off. After a few he turned his head towards Bill with a slightly apologetic smile. "If you wouldn't mind, call me Lieutenant." Horatio wasn't able to put his finger on the reason why at present, but his title tended to both calm and focus his mind, keeping it set on the task at hand.

"Don't mind at all, Lieutenant," Bill said. He wasn't much for formality, but if it worked for other people, that was fine with him.

He kept an eye out for any movement as they headed towards the beach. "It's pretty bloody mad, this whole thing, isn't it?" he commented.

"The most dangerous trick the island has played thus far," Horatio agreed. Second only to the sudden disappearance of some islanders to dinosaur territory, in fact, and this trick brought the dinosaurs into their very homes.

"I don't know about you, but I'd have preferred to wake up a woman."

Stacy couldn't remember much of what happened. It was chaos and a lot of it, the roaring pulse of - animals? - something from childhood nightmares that should have stayed there. She didn't like it, didn't want to listen to it anymore ( ... )

With Quatre covering them both defensively, the two headed out from the compound, cautiously heading east on the main path. It wasn't the first time Sara had wished for a gun, but it was the first time here; not that she didn't trust Quatre, but more that they might need more than one.

After about fifteen minutes, her eyes caught a flash of unnatural colour, and she held up a hand for Quatre to pause as she looked at it again, then proceeded forward. "Hello?" she called quietly. "Who's there, please?"

Quatre stopped, the Beretta a little too easy in his hand, a little too natural. He looked from Ms. Sidle to the person in the shadows, poised for defense, but it didn't feel like a dinosaur.

Then again, since he'd come to the island he hadn't been feeling much of anything. "Are you all right?"

"Hello?"

Stacy's voice was slightly hoarse, but not enough to where it would crack. She swallowed and licked her lips again, trying without avail to get her leg up under her again. It didn't work and she slipped back to the ground, hissing in frustration.

"Is someone there?"

Azalyn had grown incredibly tired of the Compound. The beach was beautiful, but she felt like exploring the vast jungle, the density of the foreign vegetation intriguing her. Especially after the storm, one like she'd never seen, let alone imagined possible, everything seemed so placid. Trees and vines grew wildly and she felt at peace to just wander, her cloak drifting out behind her as she walked with her armored boots, crunching the fallen foliage ( ... )

Screaming made for an excellent indicator of distress. One hardly needed any powers of deduction at all, in fact, to hear a woman's shrieking cries above even the deeper racket of crashing through the jungle trees. Already suffused with nervous energy, Holmes welcomed a focus for all his attention, and took less than a moment to orient himself to the proper direction.

"This way!" he called with a shared glance at Wash, breaking into a sudden sprint through the underbrush.

Oh, God. Just because he ended up on this search and rescue team did not mean that he had planned on actually either searching or rescuing. But he was off. Running and fumbling for his gun.

"Are we really doing this? With the running and the dinosaurs..."

"I order you to stop!"

The dinosaur and the screaming girl were luckily closing in on the Compound. Maybe luckily, or maybe not. It couldn't have been told then. The ground seemed to rumble and the trees shook as the giant lizard kept moving as fast as it possibly could.

Azalyn tried to reach up and grab onto one of the spikes, but the thing didn't slow and it made it hard for her as she was bumped into trees and dragged over the brush. There was blood dripping down her leg, but she couldn't say what it was from because she'd been dragged now for so long.

"Please! Please no more!" her lungs were becoming exhausted and the screams began to fade.
