ho ho ho!

Christmas morning wasn't usually like this. In fact, Christmas morning Nick was usually fast asleep after a long (very long, incomprehensibly long) night's work. But the island was a very different place, and called for a very different approach. So Nick woke up with the dawn, dressed in a pair of dark trousers and a warm red sweater he'd found in ( Read more... )

"Merry Christmas," Cuddy said warmly, stepping across the threshold and further into the rec room. She was bundled in clothes for the outdoors but nothing was going to stop her from saying hello to Nick before she did what she needed to do. He'd been so kind to her, and even though she didn't observe Christmas in her religion it was still special to her.

"Merry Christmas!" said Nick, pleased to see her again. "Are you having a good day so far?"

"Very," she said with warmth in her voice. "I think I'm about to make someone's day better as well. And yourself?"

"Well, it is my favourite day of the year," he said. "So you must tell me, Lisa, what it is you'd like for Christmas this year."

And there came Christopher Robin down to the fire, dragging his Bear behind him, thump, thump, thump against the floor. "Good morning," he said happily. "Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas!" said Nick happily. "You're up bright and early, aren't you? Are you and your bear having a good Christmas?"

"Oh, yes!" Christopher Robin said happily. "Very much. Are you?"

"I," said Nick, "am having a wonderful Christmas. "I've got my cookies and my tea and my bag of gifts... and I haven't any idea what more an old man could ask for on a day like today."

Dairine wanders out of her room in her pyjamas, stifling a yawn behind one balled-up fist, bright red hair tangled and sticking out in all directions. "Mmf. Morning," she mumbles. "M'ry Christmas."

Nick grinned at her and waited a moment for her to become more alert before returning the greeting. "Though there's no longer any hot chocolate," he told her, "I believe they have some freshly brewed coffee in the kitchen, or perhaps some juice?"

"Oh, coffee," Dairine mumbles, in something approaching sleepy happiness. "That's good." She starts to shuffle off, then looks back at him curiously. "What's all that stuff?"

"Christmas gifts," said Nick with a smile. "You go get your coffee and we'll talk about yours when you get back."

Was it Christmas? Mark had been lugging that tree around, but sometimes his body was so exhausted he was sure he'd slept days when it had only been hours.

He grabbed his cup of tea (God, he hated tea, where was the coffee?) and sat down next to some fat guy.

"Mornin," he drawled. He hoped it was morning.

It was definitely Christmas, and this jolly old dude made it a little hard to ignore or even be bitter about. It had been Christmas when he'd landed. It had officially been a year.

Fuck. He missed his birthday.

"Thanks. Hey, you too," Roger said. He didn't know why, but he was in an amicable mood. "How long you been here, man?"

"Oh, a few weeks now, I believe," he said. "I understand I arrived right around the same time as the snow. I'm Nick," he introduced himself. "And yourself?"

Spendin' Christmas here without Atticus an' Jem has been something kinda awful, an' it's made me a lot more sad than I usually am. I've got plenty of good friends here an' people to look after me, but it's still not the same.

So I can't help it if I'm a little bit sad when I walk into the rec room an' see the nice man I met before, the one who told me 'bout buildin' snow forts. There's something real familiar like 'bout him, an' somethin' sorta comforting, but I can't quite place my finger on what it is.

"Hiya," I say, wanderin' into the room an' wavin' at him.

"Well hello there, Scout," said Nick cheerfully, "and a Merry Christmas to you! Are you having a good day so far? Did you see the plate of cookies in the kitchen?" A good day for Nick was definitely one in which there was a plate of cookies ready for the taking.

"Merry Christmas!" I say, takin' a seat on the floor next to Nick. "I did see the cookies, an' I only took one, so I wasn't greedy or anything." The last thing you wanna do is be greedy on Christmas, of course.

"I've been havin' an okay day," I admit. "I miss Atticus an' Jem."

"Ahhh," said Nick knowingly. "It's a little strange spending the day without my Mary as well, so it's a good thing I have so many friends here to spend the day with me." He leaned in a little closer to tell her a secret. "I took three cookies. So maybe I'm a little greedy."
