One of the first things Nick discovered about the island was that it had a supply of woodworking tools. No, that wasn't quite true. One of the first things Nick discovered about the island was that it had an almost endless supply of wood. The discovery of the tools happened only after he had been introduced to the interior of the Lodge. Still, in ( Read more... )

Pam wasn't scheduled to work in the IPD office today, but she found herself up at the Lodge anyway. I mean, they had a fireplace in there and it was much warmer than the hut.

When she walked into the rec room, making a beeline for the bookshelf. After a few moments of searching, she came up with some promising looking books on pregnancies. She wasn't entirely sure if they covered what to do if you were stuck on a tropical island that, randomly, decided that sometimes it didn't want to be a tropical island, but she was hoping.

She managed to pull a chair closer to the fire and collapsed into it, shooting Nick a slightly embarrassed smile. Just moving a chair around had her a little out of breath.

[ooc: I'm going to bed in like 10 minutes, but I really wanted to have Pam meet Nick. :3]

Nick hardly even glanced at the books before meeting her eyes and giving her a warm smile. "Expecting?" he said, with the tone of a man who suspected he already knew the answer to his question. "Or just hoping to be?"

Pam blushed, looking down for a moment. "Um. There's a good chance of it," she replied. "I think we'll know for sure within another week or so."

Nick just smiled and gave her a nod of understanding. "My wife and I never did have any children of our own," he said, "but I've always been especially fond of them, particularly around this time of year. Except when they get candy canes stuck in my beard, of course, but even that can be forgiven."

Abby bounced into the rec room, humming bits of random songs (which may have included Christmas Carols) under her breath.

She tossed a cheerful "Hello!" to the man in front of the fire as she skipped to the bookshelf and started looking through its current attempt at driving her nuts.

Books on the theory of Christmas? Did those even exist?

Mere moments after she came within hearing distance, Nick caught the tune of Good King Wenceslas and started humming it, then eventually singing it to himself, as he continued to sand. He did look up at he sang to give her a friendly, welcoming wave.

"Y'know, most people don't know the words to that one. It's not one of the really popular ones, mostly because I don't think anyone really knows how to pronounce Wenceslas," she chuckled.

"Wenceslas," Nick repeated back to her with a cheeky grin. "I've always found it a very jolly tune, not quite as upbeat as Jingle Bells but not so solemn as Silent Night."

There's snow everywhere, an' I'm lovin' it. My hut magically poofed into bein' a cabin sorta thing, an' really the only thing that could make it better would be havin' Jem here to run around in the snow with.

But I can't be outside forever, 'cos of all the adults runnin' about sayin' you'll catch your death of cold, so I run inside to warm myself by the fire before goin' back out to make snow angels.

There's an older man sittin' by the fire, lookin' like he's doin' a lot of hard work makin' stuff, so I sit an' warm myself quietly so's not to disturb him.

Of course, there was no universe in which a child could come into the vicinity of Nick and not get a warm welcome. "Hello there," he said, continuing his work as he talked thanks to many, many years of practice. "You look like you're enjoying the weather!"

Oh, well, this man looks like he's up for a chat, which is always good. I love meetin' new people an' such!

"Yes, sir, I am. I'm from Alabama -- that's in the United States on Earth --" I add that, 'cos I've met enough people from space an' the future an' Europe an' all that I need to be specific "--an' we don't ever get snow 't all, so's this is awful fun."

"Oh yes, I go there every year," he told her with a knowing nod. "Then this weather really is a novelty for you. Have you had a chance to make a snow fort yet? After tonight, there's certainly going to be enough snow for one."

Ragetti, had been curled up randomly under the pool table as he slept out of view. He had started out on the couch only to be uncomfortable, and had migrated from chair to chair before simply crawling underneath the strange table to fall into a doze.

Snorting, he jerked awake and immediately sat up only to conk his skull with an almost hollow 'thud' and fell backwards with a yelp. Whining slightly, he scowled up at the belly of the furniture and rolled over to crawl out from under his napping spot to notice an older gentleman (he thought gentleman instead of man, because the man looked like a gentleman) in front of the fire, and he smiled sheepishly while rubbing the slightly sore spot on his noggin'.

"Fergots I was un'er der." he explained with a lopsided grin before pulling himself to his feet with a stretch. He then noticed that the gentelman (not just man) was holding something and he peered at it in almost childlike curiosity. "Whotcha doin'?"

"This," said Nick, holding up the half-finished shape in wood, "is part of a toy sailboat. It doesn't look like much right now, but I'm sure in the end it will all come together nicely. I might even be able to find some good, strong cloth for the sails." He admired curiosity as a character trait, in children and in adults.

"Toy?" He asked. He had seen toys, in shops and in houses that he had helped rob, but he wasn't familiar with them on a personal level. Toys were for children whose families could afford them, or from fathers who knew how to make things.

He approached and dropped into a sitting position next to the man, keeping his eye wide and trained on the object he held. "Der migh' be cloth in da clothin' box. Ans der be real canvas ans its o' ole' sails on da Black Pearl, da ship ins da bay."

"There's a ship here?" said Nick, curious himself now. "Well, how extraordinary, I'll have to go and take a look for myself; I'm sure I'll find it quite inspiring. Where did you say it could be found?"

Pooh, Piglet and Christopher Robin were exploring amid the trees near the lodge-that-had-been-Compound. Everything had changed of a sudden, and the entire island had been covered in the most delightful snow. Ray had helped Christopher Robin find a good warm coat, and scarf and had, and scarves for Pooh and Piglet as well. Pooh didn't mind the cold so much, since he was covered in fur and stuffed with fluff, but if they stayed out too long without going in for a warm cup of tea, Piglet's teeth would start to chatter.

Which is what had happened just now, and in they went. Christopher Robin was holding them each by a paw when they passed the fire, and saw the man carving. Christopher Robin was fascinated by carving. "Good afternoon," he said politely. "What are you making?"

"Well, good afternoon, young man!" said Nick, giving him a gentle smile and indicating that Christopher Robin might sit down next to him, if he liked. "Right now I'm making a sailboat. Now, it might not look like a sailboat just yet, but once all the pieces come together I think it will be a fine representation."

Pooh and Piglet sat down by the fire. Christopher Robin peeled out of his coat and hat and scarf, and sat down to pull off his boots as well. "Because you're carving it?" he asked, even though he already knew the answer. "What's it for?"

"Well, I expect when I'm finished I'll find someone to give it to," said Nick, studying it thoughtfully like he'd just come up with that answer. "I don't suppose you know any boys or girls who like sailboats, do you?"
