One of the first things Nick discovered about the island was that it had a supply of woodworking tools. No, that wasn't quite true. One of the first things Nick discovered about the island was that it had an almost endless supply of wood. The discovery of the tools happened only after he had been introduced to the interior of the Lodge. Still, in ( Read more... )

Pam wasn't scheduled to work in the IPD office today, but she found herself up at the Lodge anyway. I mean, they had a fireplace in there and it was much warmer than the hut.

When she walked into the rec room, making a beeline for the bookshelf. After a few moments of searching, she came up with some promising looking books on pregnancies. She wasn't entirely sure if they covered what to do if you were stuck on a tropical island that, randomly, decided that sometimes it didn't want to be a tropical island, but she was hoping.

She managed to pull a chair closer to the fire and collapsed into it, shooting Nick a slightly embarrassed smile. Just moving a chair around had her a little out of breath.

[ooc: I'm going to bed in like 10 minutes, but I really wanted to have Pam meet Nick. :3]

Nick hardly even glanced at the books before meeting her eyes and giving her a warm smile. "Expecting?" he said, with the tone of a man who suspected he already knew the answer to his question. "Or just hoping to be?"

Pam blushed, looking down for a moment. "Um. There's a good chance of it," she replied. "I think we'll know for sure within another week or so."

Nick just smiled and gave her a nod of understanding. "My wife and I never did have any children of our own," he said, "but I've always been especially fond of them, particularly around this time of year. Except when they get candy canes stuck in my beard, of course, but even that can be forgiven."

Pam laughed, nodding as well. "I can't imagine that would be very pleasant." She closed her book again, resting it in her lap. "This will be our first."

She paused, wrinkling her brow slightly. "I'm.. I'm sorry. I haven't even introduced myself. I'm Pam." She leaned forward, offering him her hand.

Nick set down his work and brushed the sawdust off his hand so that he could take hers. "You can call me Nick," he told her. "It's my pleasure to meet you, Pam. Or I should say, to meet both of you."

Pam shook his hand firmly and smiled, dropping her other hand to her still relatively flat stomach. "It's nice to meet you, too, Nick," she replied. "Are you making something?" She gestured towards the wood he was sanding.

Nick held it up to show her the unfinished work. "It'll be a sailboat when I'm through," he told her. "Still a few pieces missing at this point, but I think it's taking shape."

"It's definitely coming along," she agreed. "It must be cool being able to make things with your hands like that. I can draw in a way that's not terrible, but it's not the same as having something like that."

"Well, I've had many, many years of experience," said Nick. "Some of these things I can almost make in my sleep, now, though I never did become much of a drawer or painter. Just enough to make some of the toys as bright as could be."

"Really?" she asked. "I wish I had some real paints. My husband made me some out of plants, but.. they're just not the same."

"No paints?" said Nick. "Well, that's a real shame. I suppose someone will have to find a way to reinvent them; I seem to remember a time they used to be made out of eggs and crushed pigments, though that was a very long time ago now."

Pam shrugged a little. "I haven't really painted in a long time, anyway," she admitted.

"Neither have I," said Nick with a matching shrug, his accompanied by a smile. "That's no reason not to want to do it now. People are capable of extraordinary things here."

"Yeah, they definitely are," she murmured, leaning back a little. She could think of at least a handful of things people had done here that they probably never would've done if they weren't here.
