Summary: Albus gives his family some important news but his mother isn’t happy for him.
“Mom, I’m tired of fighting with you.”
“I know you don’t understand, and I don’t know how to explain it better. He is everything to me. This isn’t a crush or a phase. This is it, Forever.”
“Scorpius and I have been dating for four years. You never accepted us, always hoping I would grow out of it and find a witch. I am telling you now, I proposed, he accepted, end of story.”
“Mother, I am going to pretend you did not suggest that Scorpius and I would not have a real family. I love him, he loves me. I am not going to find someone else. He is my soulmate.”
“Yes, it will be something when a Potter marries a Malfoy. I am sorry that when you were eleven, Scorpius’s grandfather, who died before Scorpius was even born, tried to kill you.”
“Of course, there is more, but that was really between Dad and Mr. Malfoy, and they have reconciled. Honestly mother, we have been having the same fight over this since my first year when Scorpius and I became friends.”
“Only you don’t like me being with Scorpius. The rest of the family has long since forgiven any grudge against the Malfoys, and accepted that I am with another man. Maybe you missed the rounds of congratulations for my engagement from everyone else.”
“No, Dad really likes Scorpius, he just hates fighting with you about it. Same goes for everyone else.”
“I am twenty years old and yes, that is young but I am older than both of you were when you married and we just got engaged tonight. It will be at least a year before the wedding.”
“It doesn’t matter. Nothing changes how I feel. Scorpius is my world, the most important person in my life. The simple lack of him is more than other’s presence. I am not complete unless he is with me. We tried being apart, back when I still cared what you thought. I cried every night until Scorpius couldn’t take it anymore and crawled into my bed to hold me. That’s when I realized that I had someone who loved me unconditionally.”
“Yes it’s romantic, but it is very real, which you would know if you ever spent time with us. I am done arguing about this. I am marrying Scorpius. Dad, James, Lily, I appreciate your support. Mom, you don’t have to come to the wedding or have any part in our life together.”
“Mom, I love you but don’t make me chose, it won’t be you. Think about what I’ve said and if you decide to finally accept Scorpius, we’ll talk again. Good night everyone.”
Albus pulled out of the fire. He knew telling his mother would not go well, but it was still frustrating to know that she never accepted that he was gay and would never accept Scorpius.
Albus turned to find Scorpius waiting for him. Scorpius brushed the soot off his shoulders before pulling him into a tight hug. The comforting presence of his lover reminded Albus why his mother’s opinion didn’t matter, in the end. He had Scorpius and that was all he would ever need.
