Generally, Scripps has found a sort of calling in playing the background for the whimsy of his friends, allowing them to sing and act and be fools around him. It's not to say that he doesn't partake, but every group needs a steady anchor to provide the backing music and the task has fallen to him. It's not as though he's the most responsible, per se, but at least he's steady. He indulges, from time to time, in the acting and the play and the singing, but it's a rare treat that makes it all the more wonderful when he does get to do it.

Truth be told, though, he has waited until most people have left the rec room -- just because he enjoys it doesn't mean he's ready for an audience to peer at him with eager eyes. When he's sure that he's fairly alone (because there's only a certain degree of alone that you can ever achieve at the Compound), he runs through his scales to warm up, followed by chords, and lets his fingers fly easily over the keys.

It doesn't take long to settle on a song. Posner had an affinity for Sondheim and Scripps learned the whole catalogue as a result. Every key is well-embedded in his mind and he needs no sheet music, not any more. There's a consistency and a fondness to these songs and he might stumble here and there, but he stays true with posture firm and fingers arched, laying heavy on the pedal to draw out pianissimo notes before he contributes to the song with the lyrics.

It's easy to slide into it, though he's unused to hearing his own voice. The novelty makes him smile before he focuses and settles on playing strong notes as he sings along, Good Thing Going followed by Not A Day Goes By echoing crisply, clearly through the rec room and bordering parts of the Compound as a result.

Maybe it's not writing an opus, but there's always tomorrow and the day after that for whatever true writing he's eventually going to do.

[Find him singing in the rec room whenever you like. You can find the song and the quality of his singing here to hear what he sounds like. ST/LT welcome.]
