“So basically, I think what I’m asking is, is there something, y’know, wrong with me?” Ray asked in a loud whisper, shrugging a shoulder as he pressed his back up against the tree trunk. “In your opinion.”

Not that Fraser’s opinion when it came to matters of the heart was particularly normal itself.

“Because-and this is scary, Benny. I mean, it doesn ( Read more... )

Asher watched, for a moment, as the Mountie stopped and seemed to engage in a argument with his... wolf. He'd heard of people treating their pets like people, but that was just bordering on ridiculous. Or possibly insanity.

"You're only as good as the company you keep," Asher commented once Ray was within earshot. "Just some food for thought."

"How are you still alive?" Asher asked. No one that bad at lying could have survived going undercover with the mob and lived to tell the tale.

Ray didn't really know what else to say other than what he'd told Asher already. He lifted his shoulders at the question and opened his palms, his face asking the other man what he wanted him to say.

"You sure you don't want to follow him?" He asked, nodding off behind Ray's shoulder.

"Nah, we're done." Fraser was probably gonna start tracking another weird animal to keep his skills honed and Ray had definitely had his fill today.

He checked his watch. "Patrol ended about an hour ago, so I am free for the rest of the day..." he trailed off, unsure as to whether Asher would appreciate the suggestion that they do something together.

"Really? Well, don't let me keep you," Asher said, moving around Ray to start his way back up the path.

Now, if only he could figure out where his fucking dog went. Maybe if he started arguing with Onyx like the Mountie did with the wolf it'd be easier to actually keep him near by when he took him out on walks.

Ray's faced screwed up in confusion. He didn't even know what he'd said this time. He usually had some idea but right now? Nada.

"Uh, hello? What's with the brush off?"

After a half hour of talking on and on about Asher, this wasn't exactly what Ray'd had in mind for the next time he saw him.

"I'm sorry, were you not done shrugging at me?" He didn't bother turning around to check; you see one shrug, you've seen them all.

"Hey, hey," Ray caught up with him and stepped in front, a hand held out to Asher's chest but not quite touching. "That stuff with Fraser, that was private, okay. He and I are friends. We talk. That's all."

It wasn't all, but now clearly wasn't the time for Ray to get anything off his chest.

It was Asher's turn to shrug, only his was a lot more indifferent with an expression to match.

"Okay... Can I go now?" If he didn't ask, he just ran the risk of shadow-Ray making an appearance and following him all the way back to the compound, and there were few things that annoyed him more than that.

It didn't take Ray long to come up with an answer this time.

"No." He stepped back and hooked his thumbs into his belt, settling into the stance. "Not if you're leaving because of me."

"I'm not leaving because of you," Asher insisted, demonstrating that he could lie just as horribly as Ray when he wanted to. "Now can I go?"

"Oh," Ray groaned, as if the words had physically hurt him. "To my face as well. This ain't great."

It was probably too late to salvage the conversation by telling Asher why he'd asked Fraser to keep quiet, so damage control it was.

"No, you cannot. Just take a second, will ya, Asher, and ask yourself 'what is it that is ticking me off right now? What has actually happened in the last three minutes to make me mad?'" Ray hoped all Asher needed was a little perspective. "Big picture? Nothing."

"You." Was the answer to both of those questions. "I said okay, what more do you want from me? Blood? And for future reference, talking to me like I'm eight doesn't help the situation any."

Ray let out a noise of exasperation and balled up his hands, sticking them to his forehead.

"No, no, no. This always happens and we end up arguing about nothing and I let it happen, but not this time, alright." Nobody on this earth made Ray wish he could time travel more than Asher did. Even back five minutes would do.

"If you'd let me go there wouldn't be any arguing." Two people were generally needed for that. Or one person and his pet.
