“So basically, I think what I’m asking is, is there something, y’know, wrong with me?” Ray asked in a loud whisper, shrugging a shoulder as he pressed his back up against the tree trunk. “In your opinion.”

Not that Fraser’s opinion when it came to matters of the heart was particularly normal itself.

“Because-and this is scary, Benny. I mean, it doesn ( Read more... )

The problem with studying so many hours of the day, in addition to teaching two rather advanced courses, was the fact that there was little time for exercise or fresh air. The boys had made that fact pretty clear to Hermione whenever she sat down for work, Ron in particular, but Hermione had been firm on staying in all of her classes and continuing to work for the Council, more because with all the activity, she was feeling happier than she had in quite some time. The idea that she was being productive in some way, even if not the way she would have most preferred, managed to keep her nervous energy at a simmer, tolerable to her as she went about her day ( ... )

It was a good thing Ray was still in the habit of switching on the safety on his gun. He was startled to say the least and could hear Kowalski's annoying jibe in his head: jumpy.

He gave the girl a sheepish look as he lowered the weapon, getting the butt out of her face.

"No worries. Just be louder next time."

Hermione gave the gun a sudden and frightened look, staring up at the man's gaze and immediately holding up both hands; it felt strange, to be so alarmed when the weapon wasn't anything like a wand, to instead rely on conditioning that had occurred only by means of watching movies and television to keep up with pop culture in the muggle world. She knew full well what a gun could do, of course. But the instinct wasn't there in the same way that it'd ever be, for magic.

"Do you normally have your gun on hand to point at anyone with a light step?" she asked, trying her best for a light and airy tone, though her voice remained a little too strained for that.

"When I'm on patrol I do, yeah," Ray replied, lifting the gun up and clicking the safety on in front of her, so that she knew she could breathe easy now. "Ray Vecchio, IPD." He offered her a hand, the one without the gun.

Asher watched, for a moment, as the Mountie stopped and seemed to engage in a argument with his... wolf. He'd heard of people treating their pets like people, but that was just bordering on ridiculous. Or possibly insanity.

"You're only as good as the company you keep," Asher commented once Ray was within earshot. "Just some food for thought."

Stopping dead in his tracks, Asher was met with wide and slightly terrified eyes.

Oh God.

Trying to appear normal after his initial terror, Ray reached behind him and shoved his gun into his belt. "...You been there long?"

Ray was pretty keen to find out just how long.

"Just long enough to watch your friend and his wolf have a heated debate about... whatever Mounties and wolves fight about." Probably hockey or syrup or something.

"Did they not believe in holsters back in your precinct?" Asher asked, motioning to Ray's belt.

Glancing over his shoulder at Fraser gave Ray a couple of moments to recall his words. It was all a bit of a muddle and he wasn't entirely confident that Asher hadn't heard something...revealing.

He didn't look freaked out though. Was that a good sign?

"Uh..." He swung his gaze back to Asher, then looked down at himself. "Oh, yeah. They issued me with one. But I figured if I was ever gonna get patted down, I wanted all the action to happen further south."

"I'm sorry?" Fraser said once he'd caught up with Ray again, not having caught what he'd said.

Diefenbaker followed, but kept to Ray's side instead since the other man hadn't been the one who just put a damper on his fun.

"I said I wish I knew more Canadians," Ray replied, raising his voice to make sure he was heard. He was glad Fraser had chosen his company over that of the bird's - it showed that there was still some sanity left in there.

"I know, I know," Ray told Dief, sharing his lament and rubbing him behind an ear. "I wanted it for dinner too."

"You know plenty of Canadians," Fraser insisted. "And given the diversity here on the island, it just seems silly to limit yourself."

There had been numerous occasions where Ray had likened Canadians to beings from other planets, but on the island, there actually were beings from other planets.

"Well, you know, Benny," Ray began, successfully managing to sound as if he was actually putting some thought into it, "Canadians are my favorite."

After Americans and Italians and Britons and generally everyone that wasn't from Canada.

"Are we done with the hiking now? Can we go get something meaty and sweet? I think I walked off twenty pounds."
