“So basically, I think what I’m asking is, is there something, y’know, wrong with me?” Ray asked in a loud whisper, shrugging a shoulder as he pressed his back up against the tree trunk. “In your opinion.”

Not that Fraser’s opinion when it came to matters of the heart was particularly normal itself.

“Because-and this is scary, Benny. I mean, it doesn ( Read more... )

Asher watched, for a moment, as the Mountie stopped and seemed to engage in a argument with his... wolf. He'd heard of people treating their pets like people, but that was just bordering on ridiculous. Or possibly insanity.

"You're only as good as the company you keep," Asher commented once Ray was within earshot. "Just some food for thought."

Stopping dead in his tracks, Asher was met with wide and slightly terrified eyes.

Oh God.

Trying to appear normal after his initial terror, Ray reached behind him and shoved his gun into his belt. "...You been there long?"

Ray was pretty keen to find out just how long.

"Just long enough to watch your friend and his wolf have a heated debate about... whatever Mounties and wolves fight about." Probably hockey or syrup or something.

"Did they not believe in holsters back in your precinct?" Asher asked, motioning to Ray's belt.

Glancing over his shoulder at Fraser gave Ray a couple of moments to recall his words. It was all a bit of a muddle and he wasn't entirely confident that Asher hadn't heard something...revealing.

He didn't look freaked out though. Was that a good sign?

"Uh..." He swung his gaze back to Asher, then looked down at himself. "Oh, yeah. They issued me with one. But I figured if I was ever gonna get patted down, I wanted all the action to happen further south."

"There'll be zero action when you accidentally shoot your junk off one of these days," he warned. If Ray didn't consider that each time he put his gun away, then he was not only stupid, but selfish, too.

"You better grab it while you can then," Ray advised with a wry smile, wandering over to him. "The action, I mean," he added conservatively, as if he wasn't insinuating exactly what he was insinutating.

"Wouldn't you be obligated to arrest yourself for public indecency? If you wouldn't, something tells me he would," Asher said, nodding off in the direction Big Red had wandered off in.

Ray had no doubt that Fraser would do exactly that, but at least he'd probably wait until after they were done. For his own sake as much as theirs.

"See, that's the great thing about this place," Ray replied, coming to a stop in front of Asher and tilting his head leisurely to the side. "There are no laws. Just don't tell anybody."

"Pretty sure there are," he insisted, taking a small step back to remove temptation. "And they'd have your coconut badge for telling people otherwise."

"No need to move away," Ray laughed in surprise. "You're so magnetic y'think I'm gonna pounce on you right here? Credit me with some will power."

Coconut badge or not it certainly wasn't the first time Ray had contemplated it before, and he could remember one night vividly when his will power had failed to hold out. Weirdly enough, he wasn't totally averse to a repeat show.

"Can't be too careful, you never know. Not with this place and not with you." Ray had a history of bipolar episodes and the island had a funky sense of humor. And there was that one time where he actually had been sort of magnetically stuck with a person for a few days.

"Hey, there are worse things I could do than pounce," Ray pointed out with a look.

He lifted a hand in a wave to Fraser so he knew he was heading off now. A finger went to his lips briefly too just to remind the Mountie (and the wolf) that what he'd said was confidential. He knew Fraser knew but he couldn't be sure about Dief.

"Where're you headed?" he asked, turning back to Asher and resting his hands on his waist.

"So I recall." As did his nuts.

"What the hell was that?" Asher asked, watching as the Mountie disappeared from sight and then turning his attention back to Ray while completely ignoring his question. His was more important anyway.

"What was what?" Ray asked, a touch of Mountie obliviousness in there. If Asher could ignore his question and get away with it, then Ray could stall.

"You know what, so don't bother acting dumb." Or the least he could do was try a little harder to make it somewhat convincing.

"It was nothing," Ray insisted, glancing back to see if Fraser had gone. The last thing he wanted was Asher asking Fraser and his friend facing the prospect of having to lie. "Just something between me and him." he added, scratching his neck with a thumbnail. "No big deal."
