Coming out of the kitchen, book in hand and juice drink in the other, he puts both down at a table and listens a little, the melody and lyrics turning over in his mind. It isn't until the other boy is finished that the song clicks, and he brightens visibly. "Pippin?"

That's the whole point.
What he doesn't expect, coming from a boy roughly his age, is for the song to be properly recognized. Beaming, he nods. "You have no idea how glad I am that you didn't just cite the Jackson 5. Not that they weren't amazing in their own right," he beams, hands clasping. "But it'd be hard to go wrong with such an amazing song."

"So I'm taking it that the jukebox is a rather... temperamental thing," Kurt suggested, still feeling himself freefalling as Alice did in Wonderland.

"You must be incredibly new if you're only just figuring that out," he says, sounding interested. New faces are one of the few ways to shake things up, and honestly, Billy just likes meeting boys his age, boys who (and there's no way he's off about this) bat for the same team, to put it metaphorically.
None of the new faces are Teddy, but making new friends keeps him busy.
"I'm Billy Kaplan," he adds, and extends a hand.

So fresh on the island, he knows that there's no reason that he should want to act on anything that he feels, even the slight flutters in his stomach, but it's an exciting thought nonetheless and, at the very least, compels Kurt to try and work things into a friendship.
He takes the hand and gives it a gentle, but firm shake. "Kurt Hummel," he smiles, slightly shy, but excited nonetheless. "A pleasure to meet you."
