Labor of Love: is society ready for a pregnant husband?not hypothetical. a transgendered man and his wife are 5 months into a healthy pregnancy. pretty nifty, though I'm sorry for the trouble they've gone through. not just the human kind but the endometriosis ( Read more... )

That is an amazing story. I found this part pretty annoying, though:

He then required us to see the clinic’s psychologist to see if we were fit to bring a child into this world

Who the hell is this doctor to question this couple's sanity, or fitness as parents? As long as this man has the physical equipment required to carry a healthy baby to term, the doctor should just treat him and keep his personal opinions to himself. If every potential parent had to pass a psych test before conceiving, half the world would never have kids.

yeah, that part didn't surprise me in the least just because I know they put intersexed & transgendered people through psychological eval crap all the time. then again, I kinda wish *everyone* was put through a psych eval before having kids. though I probably wouldn't exist if that were the case :)

what *did* surprise me, and then made me feel naive, was that they were turned away by doctors who refused to work with them. I guess doctors have that right, but I'd never consider it an option for reasons like that.

and then I started arguing with myself over the merits of doctors having the right to refuse things that clashed with their moral sensibility given that not everyone's moral sensibilities are the same as mine :)

I don't know what the big deal is about this story - it seems to just keep growing. The baby is wanted, will have two parents, so what else matters?

Unfortunately, it's *not* a man having a baby. Most transgendered females-to-male have their uterus removed. It sounds like this wo/man didn't go through the complete procedure. So, at this point, to me she's just another lesbian having a baby. I'm sorry if that's not PC, but legally it's where she stands.

ha, you're right, that *is* very un-pc :)

I pretty much choose to identify people by whichever gender they prefer.

and really, legally, he *is* a man. or else they wouldn't be married. because we don't let them lesbians marry round here in these parts. and only the existence of the bait and tackle matters for that, legally. not the contents inside the box.

wow. that's an amazing article. i'm ashamed to admit that i'd assumed the majority of f-to-m transmen would reject pregnancy as something biologically revolting. but of course, that's a construct of society, not nature.

it really does bring up all sorts of questions about the gender construct, and my mind's whirling. thanks for the link!

This is cool by my book. A couple wants to have a baby, have at it! Why does the society have to be so narrow minded and judgmental? The things these poor couple have to go through!
