Another update

I'm at my mom's house. They got power back two days ago, but we're still waiting. I just called the insurance company to file the claim for my roof, and they were friendly and immediately paid out $150 for the food that was in my fridge. An adjustor will call sometime later on down the line, but I may not be high on the list because they're ( Read more... )

It sounds surreal, just like the aftermath of a big ice storm when no one has power...

thanks for the update, glad you guys are ok and dealing with things well.

I don't suppose the news would be interested in the story about the tree compaines cleaning up the rich people's yard while y'all don't have power... but maybe?

all hands on deck indeed. We've had 17000 claims already and most people aren't at home as they have no power, and businesses haven't gotten back up and running yet, so many of those claims haven't been filed. As Ike went north and east, the claims spread through Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and points east. Gah.

I made calls all Sunday, some yesterday and some today. I've been telling people about triaging for severity also. Basically, if you just have superficial damage, it's likely they'll just send you a check and "desk adjust" the claim. I'm glad your insurer was able to give you a check to help tide you over.

i've heard the quip about the lexuses and fancy cars lining up for pods and mre's. i'd half expect the drivers to get out wearing a fur coat and taking the hand outs. the fancy people in the fancy houses pay to get their oh-so-much-more-important power turned on and homes cleaned up and yet take the free stuff that's really intended for people who actually need it. seriously, wtf.

on a much happier note, i'm glad that your family is safe and that your house came through relatively unscathed. my folks in clear lake got their power turned back on today, so logic would make me think that yours will be back soon.

can the houston tv channels stop showing the bolivar peninsula which is now barely an island?!
