I preface this by saying, I heart Montrose, I don't generally have a problem with street people, and I sincerely hope that lower Westheimer never loses its rough edges.

A friend belly-danced at Boondocks fund-raising for the same cause. My only poor experience was the sound man's belief in "too loud"

Ah, the joys of being panhandled. Since I'm small and female, they swarm me.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, I had such a problem with being hit up by people who needed cash to buy food (among other things), that I started making it a habit to always carry two granola bars in my purse or backpack. Whenever someone approached me, I said that I didn't have any cash, but that I hoped that this helped them out while they kept trying to raise the money.

A few people were annoyed, most were surprised, and the one guy who always stood outside the video rental place I used was rather pleased.

I used to do this when I worked downtown and had to wait at bus stops .. along with business cards for a close by outreach center that provides amazing variety in assistance for the homeless ( SEARCH ).
