Chapter Ten

“I’m sorry for dragging you all with me.” Taichi muttered from the backseat, his head on Kame’s lap.

Their plan was set in motion just after the movie ended where Taichi feigned nausea.

“Ne, papa, you’re not eating well again, are you?” Ryuu admonished the older man from the front seat. “Honestly! You’re hopeless without is!”

“Yeah!” Hayato seconded, also from the front seat. “I don’t get why you always have to watch out for your figure. You should not since it’s much healthier to eat than skip a meal.”

Kame grinned teasingly at Taichi. “You know how tough Papa’s work is, right? He needs to be in a strict diet otherwise he wouldn’t fit in any of his kimonos.”

“Oh.” Both boys muttered in understanding

Jin just listened to the conversation as he drove to the nearest hospital, trying not to feel alienated and out of place. He volunteered to drive so that Kame can check on Taichi who really looked like he was about to faint or barf any moment.

Taichi winked at Kame when Hayato and Ryuu turned their attention to Jin. “I told you I can do it!” he mouthed.

Kame nodded, smiling gratefully. Nobody noticed something amiss between the two.

“Ouch!” Taichi suddenly grunted, still in character and motioned for Kame to get closer. “Damn, I forgot to inform Aizawa-sensei. I hope he’s o n duty.”

“Aizawa-sensei?” Kame frowned.

“I met him in a train wreck site.” Taichi explained. “Remember when my manager was in an accident two months ago?”

Kame nodded, remembering the horrible incident of a train de-railed.

“He was one of the emergency doctors sent out on the site/” Taichi whispered conspiratorially. “You’ll like him - he kind of resembles Yamashita-kun, only with curlier hair. I’ll get him to help us with Ryuu.”

Jin saw the exchange - of what he thought was a lovey-dovey conversation - and he felt his heart tugging in hurt. ‘Is this my punishment for leaving you the second time, Kazuya?’ he thought.

“Hey, what are you whispering about?” Hayato interrupted the two.

Taichi reached out and ruffled the older twin’s hair. “It’s nothing chibi-tan. I’m just telling your dad how awful I feel.”

“Oh,” Hayato wasn’t eager to hearing the details and focused his attention back to Jin and Ryuu who were talking about soccer.

Another 20 minutes passed and Jin parked the car. “We’re here.”

“Jin, can you help me with the kids?” Kame asked, half-carrying and half-dragging Taichi out of the car.

Jin took hold of the twins’ hands as they went to the outpatient/E.R. department.

“That’s him!” Taichi whispered to Kame. “Aizawa-sensei” he called out.

Aizawa turned and looked at Taichi, frowning little as he tried to put a name on Taichi's face.

“Taichi Saotome. You saved my manager in one of your rescue assignments.”

“Oh.” Aizawa awkwardly placed a smile on his face.

“Are you free? Um, I’m not feeling well.” Taichi asked.

“Uh, sure.” Aizawa led them to a vacant consultation room.

“Jin, stay with the kids in the waiting area, will you?” Kame requested again.

Jin nodded understanding the request.

Kame entered the room after Aizawa-sensei and Taichi.

“Okay.” Taichi said in a soft voice, afraid that someone might hear their conversation. “Doctor, meet my food friend Kamenashi Kazuya.”

Aizawa nodded, quite unsure where this consultation is going.

“I actually don’t have any illness. We,” Taichi started, gesturing to Kame and himself. “Are suspecting that his son has… leukemia like his mom. And… well… after Rikka’s death, the kids are not that comfortable with hospital checkups and visits.”

“So… what exactly are you asking me to do?” Aizawa asked, although he got a little idea where this was heading.

“Make up a contagious illness that would force my kids to undergo a checkup.” Kame answered, his head bowed.

Aizawa sighed. “That’s not a very… professional thing for me to do.”

“Please doctor. They really hate hospitals and doctors… if… if he has leukemia, better we know it now that later!” Kame pleaded, his voice hitching a little in worry for his son.

“Alright.” Aizawa scratched the back of his head. “But those checkups would be overnight - you all have to stay here for the tests to make it more believable. How many people have you had contact with today?”

“Contact?” Taichi asked, grinning a little with the unintended innuendo. “Well, there’s Kame-chan here, the twins and Akanishi-kun.”

“Well then, it’s decided - you five will have to stay overnight. I’ll get a room for all five of you to stay in.” the doctor said, leaving the room to do what he said.

Kame and Taichi stood up, bowing after the doctor for going along with their request.

Taichi and Kame went to the waiting area in a subdued mood.

The twins immediately stood up, and met them halfway.

“Papa? What’s wrong?” Hayato asked, baffled why the two men looked downcast. “Did… is it something serious like Mommy’s?”

Kame kneeled in front of his sons. “No, nothing like that but the doctor says we all have to stay the night here to make sure it’s nothing serious.”

“Overnight? Why? Dad, you know we don’t…” Ryuu started whining.

“I know but these are doctor’s orders! You Papa might have caught an infectious disease and we could have gotten it so we have to stay for the exams.” Kame said in a firm tone. “Plus, if we stay overnight, you won’t have to go to school tomorrow.” He said, trying to lighten up the mood.

“Yeah! Let’s stay here! I’d like that!” Hayato butted in.

“But I don’t want to miss school!” Ryuu insisted. “Please dad? I didn’t get Papa’s illness. See? I’m fine!” he jumped a little to show he was feeling more than okay.

“No, we’re staying and that’s final.” Kame said, pinching Ryuu’s cheek when the boy pouted. He noticed Jin coming over.

“Including me?”

Kame nodded. “Everyone who were in contact with Taichi today.” He heard Taichi snickering again with the word contact.

“Oh.”

“We need to talk later.” Kame said, deciding to include the older man and tell him about Ryuu’s possible condition.

“So… these are your boys?” a man’s voice inquired and they all turned to look at the owner of that voice.

“You look like Pi-chan.” Hayato carelessly commented.

Aizawa looked confused.

“Oh, he’s their god father.” Kame smiled. “You resemble his a little.”

“Oh.” Aizawa looked thoughtful/ “Pi? A lot of my patients tell me that I look like Yamashita Tomohisa but I’m afraid I don’t know the guy.”

Just then, a page came in requesting for Aizawa on the field.

“I have to go.” Aizawa said apologetically. “I’ll ask one of the resident doctors here to take over.” he said, spotting Shiraishi. “Hey, can you supervise them for me? I already advised the front desk to get them a room and all details are with the head nurse.” He said coolly.

Shiraishi-sensei nodded. “Sure. Go.”

“Thanks!” he turned to Kamenashi. “I’ll see you guys later then.” He said with a wink before dashing off.

“Did he just… wink at you?” Taichi whispered indignantly.

“I think he did.” Kame smothered a giggle.

Shiraishi-sensei tsk’d and shook her head. “Ever the playboy.” she said smilingly. “My name is Shiraishi and I’ll take over during Aizawa’s absence.”

Kame offered his hand. “Kamenashi Kazuya.”

Whether Shiraishi recognized his name, as most ladies their age should, the doctor didn’t show it. She just smiled and ushered them to wait by the receiving area while she checks on the room Aizawa requested.

Taichi elbowed Kame and pointedly stared at Jin.

“Right.” Kame sighed. “Watch the boys, will you?”

Taichi v-signed.

“Jin, can we talk? We need to discuss… things.”

“Uh, sure.”

“Kids, stay with Papa, okay?”

The two nodded angelically.

Kame led Jin outside.

“Look, Taichi’s not sick.” Kame started. “He was just pretending to be sick to get my kids inside the hospital and be forced to have a checkup.”

“Okay…” Jin didn’t know how to react to that.

“I’m suspecting… Ryuu inherited his mom’s illness - she had leukemia.”

Jin’s eyes widened, remembering Kame’s fret over little Ryuu’s bruises earlier that day.

“And I need you to cooperate with us. I’m sorry you got caught in my family issues.”

“No. Don’t apologize. I understand.” Jin placed his hands on each side of Kame’s shoulders. Later withdrawing them awkwardly when he realized what he had done. “It’s okay with me… we are still friends right? And… friends help each other.”

Kame looked relieved. “Thank you.” He hugged Jin tightly.

The older of the two felt awkward in the embrace but later returning the hug with equal strength. “I’ll always be here for you when you need me.” Jin softly commented.

Kame let go and didn’t say a word in response to that statement. He just smiled softly at Jin and went back inside.
