So many interesting things going on: River's fears about her sanity and wholeness, the ease with which they consider their present, future, and past together, Inara's realization of the level of mutuality between them.

It's clear in your story that who Mal and River are doesn't really change whether they are alone or with others, but even so it makes sense that what would most readily convince Inara that their relationship is genuine would be seeing Mal and River in a private moment. And even in her shock, she would be gracious.

Excellent. I love their relationship - it's solidity, it's sureness, it's gentleness, as well.

Also love the dynamics between them and Inarra.

It's very interesting to me to meditate on what they would be to each other, and how Mal's sheer experience of things always going very, very badly will play out with River's calculations and sense of possible lifepaths---and if they would actually continue to be surprised.

Nice chapter. Looks like Inara is finally getting it. I wonder if Mal still has it in his head to make River a Reynolds. I remember that River said that she would marry Mal in the future. Wouldn't be fun if River proposed instead? I can just imagine their faces.

I do intend to continue this, but right after I posted it, I became involved in preparing to move my office, and won't have much free time for a couple more weeks. So, eventually, there will be an update. That's why I write them as almost stand-alones; I know I can't do a cliff-hanger.
