Here we are…time for another review of a wonderful Doctor Who episode! Have I mentioned how much I adore my Who!? I’d also like to give a shout out to
humansrsuperior (which, btw, I found out where you got your name, awesome ep! *hehe*). Because you lost your review, I’ve decided to write this in Word and then transfer to LJ. Well, this is going under a cut ‘cause I expect it to be long.
Oh, and spoiler warning…if you’ve seen the episode, you’re fine.
First off, I’m a shipper, and looking at this through shipper eyes. And…I am finding it wonderful that I can lose half my ship but haven’t lost the shippy! *grin*
Opening: Eh, whatever, bad guys are aliens who look and act like witches, bring on my Doctor!
Opening TARDIS Scene: The return of the brown suit! Hooray!! *thud* Love the brown suit. Love that he’s using his foot to get her to go. *hehe* “Blimey! Do you have to pass a test to fly this thing?”
What does he say in response? “Yes” and “then I fly it now” or something. Didn’t he not pass his tests? Didn’t he need to steal his TARDIS? I could be wrong since I’m not a Whovian of old, but…I find that funny.
Killing Butterflies and Grandfathers: Awesome scene… “Don’t step on any butterflies, what have butterflies ever done to you?” *hehe* Boy, she has a lot of questions. Smart cookie she is, but I can see the Doctor getting annoyed with the ‘stupid ape’ asking such questions.
Never Meet Your Heroes: Fresh new eyes, this Martha has. I can see how the audience could feel more related to the Doctor then to Martha this series, unlike how we felt with Rose, for the excitement of the first experience is kinda lost on me. I’ve already been through that for the last two series of traveling with the Doctor. *grin*
Conversing with Shakespeare: The Doctor is a fanboy! *hehe* And Martha is hey nonny nonny! This makes me think of Much Ado About Nothing. I love this era.
And we also get not one but two references to a 2nd episode again! Sir Doctor of TARDIS is mentioned, even though Shakespeare isn’t phased by psychic paper, and the Doctor’s “No, don’t do that” to Martha’s attempt at Elizabethan English, which shoots back to Tooth and Claw and Rose’s attempt at Scottish.
Drowning Man: Uh, ewww. Loved seeing the white trainers though. *grin*
Room at the Elephant:
First off, sharing a room. I don’t mind this at all. You see, it’s a quick trip in the TARDIS…of course he’s not going to let her sleep there! She hasn’t earned her own room yet.
Second piece: love the TARDIS jacket again. Toothbrush with built in toothpaste. Wonderful!
Third piece: Harry Potter. I don’t know Harry Potter much past the part that I watched DT multiple times as Barty Crouch Jr. However, my sister enjoyed the joke. *grin*
Fourth piece: In bed. The Doctor is totally oblivious to Martha’s advances. This makes me happy. And a Torchwood reference! *grin*
And the Doctor is trying to work it out, but can’t quite get there. He has to talk it out, and then Rose triggers the missing link. Oh, my poor Doctor. My heart died and squeed in the same instant. “There’s something I’m missing, Martha. I’m really close. It’s staring me right in the face and I can’t see it. Rose would know. That friend of mine, Rose, right now, she’d say exactly the right thing. Still, can’t be help. You’re a novice, never mind. Take you home tomorrow.” Oh, the way he says her name and the music at that moment, oh, SQUEE! I don’t even care that it totally pissed off Martha. I like the girl, but she really does need to learn that he’s a man with two broken hearts.
Rage, Rage: “Rage rage against the dying of the light.” Shakespeare wants to steal that. “You can’t, it’s someone else’s.” *hehe* I had to look that one up. It’s from Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night by Dylan Thomas. That sounds familiar.
Flirting: “57 academics just punched the air.” Boy, dear Doctor, how annoying it must be to have everyone flirting with you all the time. I wonder how Jack is going to handle the new you (after he punches you out for losing Rose and leaving him on the Game Station *no, not a spoiler, just what I suppose!*).
Bedlam: “to be or not to be” “you should write that down” “a bit pretentious?” *hehe* I’m loving the quotes this episode!
Return of the mind meld! The Tenth incarnation says he doesn’t make a habit of this, but he’s now done it three times! There you go Reinette, you are sooooo not special at all! You are never mentioned again, but Rose is all the time! *grin*
Oh, of course they are all on All Hallows Street. Martha’s screaming… yeah, not going to help since the whole place is screaming that.
Back to the Future: “Back to the Future” “The movie?” “No, the novelization.” *hehe* I can’t wait until he calls her a stupid ape for all these questions!
The Naming: Again, here comes the shippery squees and despair:
“But your heart grows cold. The North winds blows and carries down the distant Rose.” “Oh, big mistake, ‘cause that name keeps me fighting!” *squee* *thud*
Love the symbolism in that phrase. The North wind reminds me of Nine, and Rose is distant. The poor Doctor can hide his name, but cannot hide his deep feelings over losing Rose. Bring her back! Who cares if two universes collapse! *grin*
Only One Heart: I love this scene! “Ahh! I’ve only got one heart working. How do you people cope?!...I’ve got to get the other one started. Hit me on the chest!...*Martha does so*…Other side!” I love how his voice goes up a pitch as he says that. *hehe*
Going the Wrong Way: Martha: “We’re going the wrong way!” Doctor: “No, we’re not….We’re going the wrong way!” This reminds me of last series with the Doctor taking a left in Torchwood and Yvonne saying: “Other way, Doctor.” *grin*
Shakespeare Saves All: Blah, blah, Shakespeare’s a genius and saves the day. Back to the important stuff…”my doting Doctor tells me I am not.” Um, I don’t think I’d really call the Doctor doting on you, William.
Queen Elizabeth: First of all, Sycorax mention! Of course, the head’s a little too long to be one, but it was a nice reference.
“Doctor! My sworn enemy! Off with his head!!” ROFL! Love the smile he gives when he says that it’s something to look forward to. Which means that he’s got to meet the queen in this incarnation! What is it with the Doctor and British queens? He does seem to get on their bad side.
Previews for next week: The Face of Boe!! New New York!! We get to find out the message! I’m so excited!!
